Breaking News Powerball up to $1.5 Billion

I brought a ticket last night and everyone at work went in on a few tickets.

People always win in random small towns.

Oh, c'mon. I thought we were going to Vegas! Although we probably wouldn't gamble most of it away...

Oh I'd go to Vegas but I am not much of a gambler. Maybe I could make Caesars think I am though and get some freebies.

Are JUB meet ups still a thing?

I did hear the last drawing had no "big" winner, but someone from Portland did will a Million dollar prize. Makes me feel better someone local got something good.

I'm enough of a gambler I do get comps. Not top-of-the line, but I've enjoyed weekday rooms at the Orleans and Paris, and I get offers from OYO and Golden Nugget.

Not officially. But a few of us travel and have been known to visit.

The Orleans is one of my favorites to go hang out at. I have not made it to OYO yet. I will need to go there and get some chips for my collection.

Sounds like there is a delay in the drawing for Monday November 7th, 2022.

Sounds fishy to me.

I'm not clear how the fishiness works. They have to award the lottery eventually, so it only gets larger, and it's already generated enough hysteria that it is enjoying record sales.

The lottery is inherently corrupt, with myriad ways of being nigh impossible to win, mostly due to simple math and permutations. Adding digits to the winning combination made it this way.

If we did control the lottery, and we don't, we'd make it where it must pay every single drawing, where a number is always chosen from the numbers chosen. But we don't. And the government and its gambling proxy continues to make it so that even fewer people win, with ever greater odds against winning. It would be a lot more fun for all if the winnings were less, but more certain. Does anyone need a billion dollars? No. Better to give away 1.9 billion dollars by awarding 1900 winners $1M each.

And in future, do it on a lesser scale, so that instead of a 36-week losing streak, each of those winners could have been awarded at the rate of 50 per drawing or per week, whatever the interval has been. Or, imagine 500 people winning $100,000 every drawing.

Just think how excited lottery players would be if they KNEW 50 players would win each week. That's one per state, on average. Much better odds.

If winners are selected from those purchased, then it is not a lottery, it is a raffle. Raffles like this are far too prone to abuse and tampering. You'd have people buying thousands of tickets with the same numbers, and you would never know what the prize is. The chances of winning are never consistent or even predictable. Turning the Lottery (where winning numbers are selected independently), into a Raffle (where winning numbers are selected from those sold), I don't believe is a good idea. Although, I do agree, they've made it too difficult to win.

But that isn't the only reason the jackpot is so high. Powerball overplayed their hand when they went to three drawings per week in August last year, coupled with making the odds ever more difficult. The reason the jackpot is growing so high is that not as many people are buying tickets. Powerball is pricing themselves out of the market. When you have to go buy tickets three times per week and no one ever seems to win, people get frustrated and stop. It is too expensive and no longer fun when you start to feel like it is a burden or obligation to keep playing. The Lottery should be fun and what they did, makes it less fun.

Why isn’t anyone winning the $1.5 billion Powerball? It’s actually because fewer people are buying tickets [Forbes]

Winning ticket sold near LA California.

Someone in my town won a Million on the drawing. Lucky bastard.
