SUPERMAN IS BACK and the wait for his return is finally over. Was it worth it? Absolutely and in every respect. This is a monumental classic of the genre, a true successor to the Richard Donner classic of the original. This time, audiences will once again believe a man can fly. Director Bryan Singer has crafted a visual tour-de-force, a movie that succeeds in balancing eye popping 21st century visuals, with the heart and soul of a story-driven epic.​

The cast was great. Anybody who doubted newcomer Brandon Routh, do not worry. He was absolutely wonderful. People often compare him to a young Christopher Reeve, but I think he injected enough of himself into the character to give him his own individuality. And, frankly, those cool water blue eyes of his are something you just want to sink into. Kate Bosworth's Lois Lane is beautifully realized, while Spacey is pure genus as Lex Luthor and Frank Langella is a wonderful Perry White. This is one Superman for the ages, a soaring, wondrous adventure that will leave audiences breathless, and a truly breathtaking ride of a movie.​

In this crowded summer season, the return of the Man of Steel is the perfect summer movie for the child in all of us, and once we hear that classic John Williams score, one is reminded that movies like these are a rarity. Forget the hype, and enjoy the return of one of the most extraordinary comic book characters ever created.​

What a difference a couple of years and bright blue tights make. Brandon Routh, 27, was just another struggling actor when director Bryan Singer picked him in October 2004 to star in Superman Returns. So who is this guy?​

​

Practically Smallville Growing up in rural Norwalk, Iowa, Routh, the son of Katie, a teacher, and Ron, a carpenter, was fascinated by the Man of Steel. Around age 5, he donned Superman pajamas and a cape to watch the first Superman on TV. "I was so excited that I gave myself a migraine," Routh tells PEOPLE. After recovering, "I was always throwing things up in the air and seeing how they would fly," he says. "My parents were like, 'This kid is crazy.'"​

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a thespian In high school, Routh fell in love with acting, so much so that he and pals performed in theater extravaganzas wearing tutus and Chippendales outfits. For a South Pacific revue, he and a friend wore grass skirts and painted ships on their stomachs. "When they flexed their abs," says music teacher Kim Ward, "boats and waves went rolling."​

Soap-erman to the rescue After a year at the University of Iowa in 1999, Routh ended up in New York City. His big break: playing hunk Seth Anderson on One Life to Live from 2001-2002. "He was a reluctant soap star," says Life castmate Sherri Saum. "He was just busting to break out."​

Mild-mannered bartender Moving to LA, Routh landed guest shots on Will & Grace and Cold Case - and made ends meet tending bar at Lucky Strike Lanes, a bowling alley. "He was very Clark Kent behind the bar," says coworker Kathleen Kaplan, who covered for Routh during his Superman audition. "He asked me once, 'What's a fuzzy navel?'" But who knew that this 6"2' fella from the Midwest who dressed up as Clark Kent during a work Halloween in 2003 would get cast to play the Kryptonite-fearing superhero in 2006's Superman Returns? Brandon Routh certainly isn't complaining.

It has been almost four months since the FIFA 2006 World Cup is over, but back in June, Swiss Tourism had spent months preparing the world for life without the World Cup, through a television and internet campaign featuring sexy Swiss men who focus less on football and more on women (and maybe some men). The Swiss Tourist board spokeman said the campaign, in four languages (english, french, german, and italian) was initially designed to encourage a high proportion of 'football widows' from Switzerland's neighbours to get away from World Cup fever. "It was never our intention to promote gay tourism, but we don't say no. The campaign obviously targets women, but if men are interested too then why not?" the Swiss tourist board spokeman added.

With the english commentary, "Dear girls. Why not escape during the summer's World Cup to a country where men spend less time on football and more time on you", the 35-second TV ad features a bare-topped farmhand moving hay, a gondola operator, two lumberjacks, a mountain climber, a ferry sailor, and the hunky Mr. Switzerland (who also happened to be real life farmer) Renzo Blumenthal milking a cow by hand (creamy), and then leaning up, pouting provocatively, again a cow (yummy). The ad finishes with the tagline, "Switzerland. Get Natural", and the web site, MySwitzerland.com.

I have never been to Switzerland, but after watching the ad, maybe there is a very good reason for me to make it as my next holiday destination!
