So I went to the movies today and one of the coming attractions was for Precious. I'd never heard of it before then but apparently it won both the jury prize and the audience award at Sundance this year and based on the trailer I'd be very surprised if it doesn't make M'onique and likely the young lead (who's name I do not yet know) serious contenders for the Oscars.

The trailer comes across as incredibly raw and intense. This could quite possibly turn out to be one of the best films of the year.

Re: Precious

It's a movie with depth. It's a real as things get in the U.S. for a number of youths in low income households.

Re: Precious

I am excitedly waiting for this movie. I saw the trailer a while back and again yesterday, and it looks to be very good.

Re: Precious

Oprah endorsed the movie on her show, so I guess that means it's a keeper.

The whole conception of the novel/movie seems like a rip off of Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, anyway.

Seriously though, I'm a little tired of movies like this. Everyone is supposed to open their hearts out to the unattractive little black girl in the ghetto suffering from abuse and low self-esteem, but nobody is telling the story of all the other victims out there. What about gay youth in the inner city? They have a story to tell and have gone unnoticed for quite some time, and the director of this movie, Lee Daniels, is himself a gay man of color. He should be more than willing to portray gay urban youth via the cinema, but instead he opts for these kinds of rehashed plot lines.
It's based on the book.

And if you want a movie on gay youth, then why don't you make it yourself and stop shitting up this thread?

Re: Precious

I know it's based on the book, which is what I said in my post.

And last time I checked, the threads were free-for-all. Telling me to go make a movie on gay inner city youth is just a cop-out.
You said it was a rip off the book. Inplying something different.

Well unless you want to fund it, don't complain. The director is making this movie, because he knows it is a good material, but most importantly, he will have the MONEY and talent to make it good.

Sure it's sad there isn't a lot of gay inner city youth movies, (well there are some if you look) but if there isnt a market or money for it, than it aint gonna get made, or better yet, marketed like this movie would.

Re: Precious

And that is the problem right there. If you can acknowledge the problem, as well, then don't get mad at me for drawing attention to it.
if you made a thread about it, i would have. but you come in here ruining the thread. and i sadly participated.

meh, i'm done. make a proper thread and maybe i will participate.

Oh for the love of.... where to begin.

1) I'm not sure what you mean by "movies like this." I can't think of any films like of similar subject matter that have been released. Maybe I just have poor exposure but the only movie I can think of in recent years that's been made to make a statement of the struggles of young youths trying to escape the perils of urban life was Akeelah and The Bee which is a VERY different movie from what Precious appears to be.

2) I actually haven't perceived there to be a lack of representation for LGBT community lately with critically acclaimed films like: Capote, Kinsey, Brokeback, The Laramie Project, Transamerica, & Milk

3) If there is an absence of gay films that has NOTHING to do with perfectly valid portrayals of urban plight. Why act like gay centric films are being pushed out by films about urban life? A quick glance at the box office makes it perfectly clear that white washed mediocre action films and 'romantic' comedies eat up the majority of the screens.

4) I've never read Push or The Bluest Eyes but my understanding is that they're very different stories. If you see similarities between the story set in the 40s and the one set in teh late 80s than it only goes to show how little progress we've made in this arena, which is even more reason why a film like this is important.

I think he wants a movie on black gay urban youth going through the same thing.

Of course, men can't get pregnant, but hey whatev.

Re: Precious

You missed the entire point of my post, but whatever. Enjoy the movie.

That you want movies about gay urban youth and not just about urban youth? You are correct and I apologize I did miss that you were complaining about there being a lack of a subset of gay film and not gay film in general. In truth I know very few films that fall into such a grouping. Perhaps you could check out Rodney Evan's Brother to Brother or any of Marlon Riggs's works.

Either way I still think the point stands that a lack in the market surely can't be blamed on the presence of films like Precious which try to portray the severity of life in the city and communicate the very real challenges thousands of people face. And I still don't think there are many films "like this" to tire of.

Re: Precious

No, he missed the point of my post.

Of my points I admit that point 2 was off base because I misunderstood part of your initial complaint but the other three are still wholly valid. There's no need to hate on one film because the lack of other films. And if you are going to get angry at such an absence why not direct that rage at oh I don't know.... Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Re: Precious

I'm pissed that Precious won't be in my city for another couple of weeks.

Re: Precious

I hope "limited" in industry talk means Toronto, and I'm hoping this is out next week.

Re: Precious

especially Mo'Nique. They might as well go ahead and sign her name on that Best Supporting Actress Oscar b/c she earned it.

That is a very dumb comment to make considering you have not seen every movie released this year.

Intelligent people would hold off on predictions until the nominations come out and they watch all 5 performances. Who the fuck is to say someone else wont deliver an equally powerful and realistic portrayal.

Re: Precious

hmmm, Mimi didn't look so convincing in that clip. hope it gets better than that. Helen Mirren was supposed to play that role.
