Re: Precious

That is a very dumb comment to make considering you have not seen every movie released this year.

Intelligent people would hold off on predictions until the nominations come out and they watch all 5 performances. Who the fuck is to say someone else wont deliver an equally powerful and realistic portrayal.

WTF? No, really, how much lead paint did you eat as a child that this is your contribution to this discussion?

I've seen many films this year, and from the trailer alone Mo"Nique is already showing herself to be a contender. You don't know how many films Moe has seen this year, and even if it's only been this one, what is it to you that Moe's opinion is she should win?

Newsflash: even the people who vote for the categories often don't see all of the films--even the nominated ones.

I can't wait to see this movie. It's one of the few films left this year that I'm hopeful for--too many movies are letdowns now.

Although, Moe, if it had Rih Rih in it, even in a bit part, it would make me even more excited to see it. :)

Re: Precious

I saw Precious today and it truly blew me away. I swear I had a hard time believing that the cast were actually acting, their emotions came across so raw and authentic-this film could have passed off as a documentary. Big bravo to all involved, especially Mo'Nique. They might as well go ahead and sign her name on that Best Supporting Actress Oscar b/c she earned it. :D

The only scene I wished they would have left out on the cutting room floor is the scene where Precious steals the bucket of fried chicken. And it's funny that out of all the scenes where she gets physically and sexually abused non-stop by her mother and father, I was most disturbed and unnerved by the image of her walking down the street with her face all greasy and shiny, gobbling down on a piece of fried chicken. I was fine with her mother nearly killing her and her newborn baby, but once I saw her eating that fried chicken I couldn't help but to think why did they have to go there. Was that really necessary for us to watch her steal a bucket of fried chicken? Why couldn't it be a cheeseburger, why is it always fried chicken?! I was fine even with the hairy ass pig's feet boiling in the pot, just not fried chicken! #-o

Other than that, I really enjoyed Precious. It's one of those types of movies where if you think you have it bad by the time this movie ends you'll realize life's not so bad at all compared to everyone depicted in this film. ;)

lol, its also in the book and it made me laugh. I havent seen the movie yet but its good to hear that it follows the book really closely.

Re: Precious

Don't know when the movie is scheduled to hit my town but I'm interested in seeing it.

Doesn't Mo'Nique sound like Tracy Morgan when he was on SNL?

Re: Precious

"Precious" opened last Friday in Atlanta, New York, LA, and a couple more cities I think..

It will open nation-wide on Nov 20th...I can't wait....

Every year the Oscar-Race has a nomination-Lock before all the films debut..Mo'Nique is this years "Oscar-Lock"...It does not mean she's going to win but it's hers to lose...

With all the movies set to release through Christmas no other Actress delivers like Mo'Nique...I hope she doesnt do a "Russell Crowe" and throw her cell phone at a Hotel Clerk or something...

Once her nomination is announced they'll watch her like HAWKS...

Re: Precious

^I think the film will be in wide release in a few weeks.

I was listening to an interesting interview on NPR with Lee Daniels, the director. He said he had to teach Mariah to walk normally, because even when she's not wearing her signature stillettos, she walks on her tip toes.

As for gay urban stories in film, what about "Paris is Burning?" Granted it's a documentary, but poignant and revealing in its own way.

Dang..I knew there was something I was suppose to listen to @ 7pm that night...I heard the promos for it on NPR thrusday or friday morning and forgot all about it...I did DVR Mo'niques appearance on Oprah on Friday and that was pretty good..She's a Beautiful woman..

I tried to go see this movie on Thursday because it was listed on Moviefone.com as playing at my local theater at 4 o'clock. So I get there and I'm told they aren't actually getting the movie until the 20th. I was so disappointed. I'm still gonna go see this though. I read the book way back in middle school and it's almost weird to see it as a movie now because when I read it it was just this obscure novel I picked up at the bookstore on a total whim because I liked the design of the book and the synopsis on the back seemed interesting.

Everyone (including Oprah) keeps saying it's hard for them to believe anyone would or could turn the book into a Film....Oprah said when she read the book years ago she knew from the jump she could not make that a "book club" feature....

That book must be deep...I'm gonna order it...

i'm not even a fan of hers, but i have to say that Monique is the main reason i can't wait to see the movie. it'll be interesting to see her in a dramatic role.

I think it's opening up in more cities this weekend before it goes nation-wide on the 20th.

If we get it in South Florida this weekend, I know what I'm doing sunday afternoon.

I think it's so Odd that "Lions Gate Pictures" witnessed the Media-Hype for months and they still decided to distribute the film at their own pace...When Oprah joined the party the film went into Super-Hype mode....This happens every year with Independent-Films but it's rare that an Independent film like "Precious" garners such Media-praise...

The same thing happened with "Dream Girls"(minus Oprah's support)...That flick didnt drop in my area until late December...Jennifer Hudson was given the Oscar a year before the promos/trailers were even released..

Since this is considered a a serious adult film, studios wait until november and december to release these films. The slow release only serves to heighten the buzz. Look right here on JUB how it's anticipated in different parts of the US because of it. All this also helps for award consideration. Films recently released with a certain hype have a better chance of being nominated.

Re: Precious

I was told by my buddy who used to work in a theater chain that films of this nature follow an "A city, B city, C city, wide" release schedule, with "A" being New York and Los Angeles, "B" being cities such as Chicago, and "C" cities being smaller cities (like my own St. Louis). Then the movie goes wide release if it garners the attention and success they are hoping for.

I haven't been able to find any sources online yet to confirm that, but it's what I heard from him and others since then.

yeah, Independent films usually get this type of treatment...

Re: Precious

It pisses me off that they announced that it was going to be out on November 6 but then it turned out that it was only going to be shown in major cities like LA, Atlanta, New York, and Chicago.

I wanted to see this movie real bad after I read the book Push a year ago. Lee Daniels is fucking brilliant and the cast couldn't be better.

Precious Breaks Box Office Records in the U.S.
Tuesday, 10 November 2009, 11:40 am
Press Release: Hoyts Distribution

Oscar hopeful PRECIOUS was a hit with U.S. audiences on opening weekend, taking an astounding $1.8 million from 18 screens for a record-breaking $100,000 screen average.

PRECIOUS now holds the box office record for the highest single day screen average for a film released on 20 prints or less, as well as the highest opening weekend gross of any film debuting on 50 screens or less. The latter, a record previously held by THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT which grossed $1.51 million on 27 screens in July, 1999.

As a result of its early box office success, PRECIOUS will expand in cinemas across the U.S. this week.

PRECIOUS, based on the novel by Sapphire, is the kind of story that is rarely told, about a character who society usually writes off, judges as a statistic, or simply ignores. Directed by Lee Daniels, PRECIOUS is set in Harlem and tells the story of an overweight, illiterate teen who pregnant with her second child, is invited to enrol in an alternative school in the hope that her life can head in a new direction.

Critics and audiences have been equally enamoured of PRECIOUS, with the film already receiving several accolades including winner of the Grand Jury Prize (Dramatic) at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, and winner of the Audience Award at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.

Executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, PRECIOUS stars Gabourey Sidibe, Lenny Kravitz, Mariah Carey, Paula Patton and Mo’Nique, and will release in cinemas across New Zealand in April 2010.

..Wow....I'll be glad when the wait is over.....|

Re: Precious

I dont like movies like this. It's like requiem for a dream. I know it's a quality film and all but it just makes me feel so miserable and shitty.

precious

precious: based on the novel push

this was an amazing movie just saw it anyone else see it

Re: precious

I read through the plot summary a while back and that story is depressing as hell! I don't think I could handle watching it.

 <----- This would be me

Re: Precious

I just saw it.

Rhonda the Jamaican girl was hilarious she had the entire audience cracking up. Some actual Jamaicans were in the theater and they started saying, "bombo clot" lol

I don't really know what the point of this movie is. I don't know why it had to be told.

The script needed some tightening.

I do not believe that Monique will win the Oscar because even though her portrayal was realistic there was no reason to her madness.

Oscars have been given to villains before but all of them had some reasonable explanation as to why they do the horrible things they do.

The break down scene near the end did not give any insight as to why she would treat Precious like that. There was no explanation for allowing her father to continuously do what he did. Instead she is going to get jealous of Precious? instead of protect her 3 year old?

The actress that plays Precious she is not going to win either but she could have won had the script been tigher.

The scene where Mary tells Precious her father has aids and later Mary asks Precious if she is coming home; Precious should have said, "I am home."

That was have sealed the Oscar.

In any event after Precious i snuck into "An Education" and the young lady that plays the lead in that movie had a complete story arc and she acted her panties off. So we will see what we shall see come Oscar night.
