The ghastly news from North Carolina on gay marriage shows what awaits the President in the long grass. If he makes it an election issue he will energise the conservatives/evangelicals who up to now have given Mr Romney a rather lukewarm response. If the election turns on culture war issues, there is a real possibility he will lose, in what is after all one of the most conservative societies in the western world. If he fights the election on economic matters his chances, in my opinion improve. For indeed the opposition will propose the same discredited neoliberal policies which have brought the US to the brink of ruin.
It's a difficult call.
Ana Marie Cox in the article below is slightly more optimistic. I hope she is right.

In view of his interview tonight, I just now emailed the WH and suggested that his being a "WUSS" was costing him credibility.

Good idea. Advocacy of gay marriage will cause him to lose votes from his base ofHispanics and blacks. If it only cools enthusiasm and increases apathy it will cost him.

Why are the US Republican States so seething with hatred and prejudice?

Unfortunately America is becoming more polarized. Please do not pretend that it is one sided. Republicans feel that they and traditional American culture and values are under attack.
Mr Krautheimer predicts that advacating gay marriage is one of the position changes BO intends to make once the election is over, if he survives. When Biden came in favor of it the other day, it was a way for the ticket to straddle the issue.

^ Exactly.

It is the same bullshit type of apology that the conservatives could have vomited out at the time of desegregation.

Oh.

That's right.

They did.

Voters in North Carolina awarded the state’s 15 Electoral Votes to Obama in 2008.

MSNBC is saying now that ABC says Obama endorses same sex marriage. He is giving an interview any minute.

MSNBC says "Pres. Obama supports same-sex marriage"

ABC NEWS...Just happened..."Obama Backs Gay Marriage"

That's because Republicans are confused about traditional American values. Republicans are the ones who hold the ridiculous notion that this is a "Christian nation" . . . which coincidentally makes them very bad Christians.

Actually for Latinos that is not quite true. 65% of Latinos who vote support same sex marriage.

This paragraph is essential:

An immediate glance at the headline statistics suggests that, in fact, there isn't. A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal found that 25% of voters would be more likely to vote for a supporter of gay marriage, while only 20% would be more likely to vote against a candidate; 54% of Americans said a candidate's same-sex marriage views made no difference.

I think at some point one has to stop trying to bridge the gap. It is not true to say that "reasonable people can agree to disagree on this issue.". You're either in or your out, and the dignity and equality of same sex and opposite sex relationships are not negotiable.
