“Representative Ryan tried to use the poor, and those who serve them, as a political prop,” said James Salt, executive director of Catholics United. “From a man who has done so much to undermine the work of public-private partnerships and faith-based groups, this is an incredibly cynical move.”

Sr. Simone Campbell, the executive director of NETWORK Lobby and “Nuns on the Bus” leader, has repeatedly invited Rep. Ryan to meet and experience first-hand how his budget proposals will affect charities similar to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Youngstown.

“If Paul Ryan is serious about serving the Gospel mission of Jesus Christ, I’d encourage him to read Matthew 6, which instructs us to serve when no one is looking,” said Salt. “You can learn a lot about a man by what he does and says when the cameras aren’t rolling. I’d strongly encourage Rep. Ryan to take a day off from campaigning to meet and get to know those who would be affected by the budget cuts he’s proposed.”

So just as Romney is using a dead Hero to try to dishonestly gain political advantage and has been asked to stop, once again....

The Catholic church has decried Ryan as Immoral, and has specifically asked him to stop using his faith as a political prop.

What's next?

Excommunication?

I would not doubt it. Stranger things have happened.

Of course the "religious" right will have nothing to say, nothing to add. To them I guess catholicism is already a cult, just as mormonism is, and they would literally sell their soul to the devil rather than vote for president Obama.

Will he answer? Will he even notice that he's been called out by the Bishops of North America, the nuns, and now Catholics united?

No matter what the answers to those questions are, I guarantee you he will lie about them when at all possible.

Did he ever work up sweat cleaning those already clean pots and pans?

It's been a while since the Church had a good excommunication. The church doesn't have the audacity to do such a thing but boy it would make for a good news reel.

Unfortunately, with the old conservative men in charge of the Catholic Church (looking at you, Pope Adolf) they'd be more likely to excommunicate a person who believed in a liberal social program or a socially progressive nun than someone like lyin Ryan.

Excommunication generally has to begin with the individual's own priest or bishop. That bishop would be Bishop Robert C. Morlino, who has chastised Biden in the past and defended Ryan when other Catholic bishops condemned his social justice positions.

The Biden/Ryan divide is part of a battle for the soul of the American Roman Catholic Church. The Ryan side has an advantage in Hitler-supporter Ratzinger; the Biden side has an advantage at the grass roots level.

The Catholic Church, with its prohibition of contraception is a major cause of the massive poverty and overpopulation in Latin America and the US.

Glad to hear that the cult he belongs to is calling him out on his bullshit move.

Paul Ryan's little photo op in the Soup Kitchen last weekend has caused some donations to be cut to the Soup Kitchen. I hope he or Romney can come up with the difference to help.

Ayn Rand Would Be Proud: Soup Kitchen in Paul Ryan's Photo Op Loses Funds, Gets Attacked By Conservative Trolls
Ryan's political theater has jeopardized donations to the food bank.
October 19, 2012 |

Last weekend, Paul Ryan demonstrated his compassion for the poor by rolling up his sleeves at an Ohio soup kitchen and faking a photo op. The VP candidate waltzed into a Cleveland-area facility well after everyone had eaten and left, and washed some pans that may or may not have already been cleaned while reporters took pictures.

In addition to widespread mockery, Ryan's half-assed attempt to simulate concern for the poor for 15 minutes drew an angry response from the President of the facility, Brian J. Antal, who told the Washington Post that Ryan's slimy political theater might jeopardize donations to the food bank. “We’re a faith-based organization; we are apolitical because the majority of our funding is from private donations,” he said. " ... we "can’t afford to lose funding from these private individuals.”

These guys just don't get it. How in the world can this be moral?

The GOP has lost its moorings in reality... morality for them is an abstract. It's something you dispense with to get your way, like every lie they tell.

A good friend (who just happens to be a nun) confided to me that she thinks that Ryan will have some serious time in Purgatory explaining himself over all of this.

Please do not call Catholicism a cult, I don't agree with a lot of what the church believes, but I have good friends who are catholic as well as my grandparents, I just feel it wrong to disrespect someone else's beliefs.

^ whatever. i am probably more Catholic than your gp's or your friends and I have no problem thinking of any branch of any organized religion as a cult.

Roman Catholicism fits the bill nicely. And it is not what is at issue here.

I'm a catholic. Altar boy and all that shit.

Doesn't bother me. Catholics said it about the Jews and burned them at the stake for the inquisition. The mideast is full of asshats who cant take someone elses opinions on their beliefs.

If I am so thin skinned about my beliefs that I need people on a Porn site to not insult my faith of birth, I would never have made it through the last decade of scandals here in Boston in the church.

Sometimes you need to hear a different perspective on how your views look to others. Blind faith and the inability to question the church leadership brought hundreds of Innocent boys into the realm of molestation.

I can own that as a Catholic. People need to make their own choices and disclaim the parts of organised faiths that are corrupt.

A two thousand year old institution can weather a guys opinion of them on a gay porn site.;)

All of that does nothing to speak to the fact that Ryan is claiming religion as a calling card of morality, as he also claims the Ayn Rand Atheism one.

It's looking more and more like Ryan is godless as Ayn would have wanted him to be, and the church is unhappy with the specter of having him as the poster boy for American Catholicism.

From the source quoted from the link:

Ryan hasn't proven that he gives a fuck (sans photo op), and neither has the Vatican for that matter!

Which is one of the reasons why American Catholic Nuns are "riding a bus."

~

I most closely identify with my relatives and family from East Texas.

Years ago I discovered that I had offended a close friend, and a friend of my family.

She's from Philly, and the first person within "my family" that I ever came out to.

I said: "Catholics aren't Christians."

Keep in mind that my Mom is "Southern Baptist" and my Dad is "Methodist," and I became "Pentecostal" (speaking in tongues, baptized and all of that!), so that was my frame of reference.

My Dear friend from Philly asked me:

"If Catholics aren't Christians then what are they?"

My answer?

"Catholics!"

BUT I was young at the time and didn't know any better!

And in this election there are two types of "Catholics" besides the "Irish" variety:

And then there is Rick Santorums view:

And now here we are with an openly Catholic GOP VP Candidate who clearly does not represent the Vatican, nor support the American Catholics Nuns,

So I have to ask:

What's "Christian" about that?

And my answer?

Nothing.

It was a political photo op.

One of the things THAT hasn't been discussed during the political debate are [URL="http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ethics"]ETHICS!

Have we, as Americans, become so desensitized that anyone who claims "I'm not a Muslim" that their statement gives them any gravitas?

Personally?

I say:

FUCK THAT!

When some dick wad politician...and I'm a Texan.... and Gov. (and former failed GOP Candidate for POTUS0 Rick Perry, and his (FAILED TO LAUNCH a challenge because "you are in that chair Blanch, YOU ARE!) Attn General Greg Abbott, and the Texas GOP Tea Bagger Candidate Elect Ted Cruz for State Senate want to start talking about "religion" ....that's free game now?

As an AMERICAN I'm pissed that those douche bags think that we're all so fucking stupid.

But...

Apparently we are, and there's a demographic out there to support that.

And I keep hoping that so long as the "opposition party" keeps playing to the "lowest common denominator" that there's a chance that our American Democracy might still survive.

Why not? Major components of its actual theology are just as made up as that of the Mormon fanfic, and I'm a baptized Catholic.

Correct. By dictionary definition, Catholicism is a cult, as are most religions.

cult |kəlt|
noun
a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object: e.g. "the cult of St. Olaf."

The word cult is derived from the Latin "cultus", meaning worship.

LOL

That's the scholar's definition, not the common definition.
