Teacher in newspaper flap to transfer schools

A Woodburn, Ind., high school teacher who faced losing her job after a student newspaper for which she acted as adviser published an editorial advocating tolerance of gays can continue teaching—just not at her old school.

A Woodburn, Ind., high school teacher who faced losing her job after a student newspaper published an editorial advocating tolerance of gays can continue teaching at another school.

Amy Sorrell, 30, reached an agreement that allows her to be transferred to another high school to teach English, said her attorney, Patrick Proctor.

''The school administration has said in no uncertain terms that she's not going to be given a journalism position,'' Proctor said.

Sorrell, who had been an English and journalism instructor at Woodlan Junior-Senior High School, was placed on paid leave March 19, two months after an editorial advocating tolerance of gays ran in Woodlan's student newspaper, The Tomahawk. Sorrell had been the newspaper's adviser.

School officials in the conservative northern Indiana community about 10 miles east of Fort Wayne said Sorrell did not comply with an agreement to alert the principal about controversial articles.

The agreement she signed includes a written reprimand that says she neglected her duties as a teacher and was insubordinate in refusing to obey school officials' orders.

Sorrell said she is ''very proud'' of Megan Chase, the student who wrote the editorial calling for tolerance and acceptance of gays, and The Tomahawk's other writers and editors. But she said she could not financially afford to fight the school district over her discipline. (AP)

Man.. we can't have someone teaching non-discrimination, can we?

Can we bomb the whole midwest? I mean really.. aside from Michael, Janet and LaToya, what have they given us?

UN-BE-LIEV-ABLE!!!

Tolerance?

Showing compassion?

NOT in the Mid-West of the U.S.!!!

No wonder anyone living in small town Mid-America get-the-hell-outta-town when they finish high school....

I think a social revolution is due to this section of America........quickly!(*8*) (*8*)

I only feel bad for the students. At least if she moves, she can spread the good word around with her, assuming she sticks to her convictions and doesn't get phased. The parents and administrators can go to hell.

Conservatives and tolerance just don't go it seems in the field of education.

I'm glad she didn't loose her livelihood, but this has brought the matter to public attention, something I think does more good than bad for her. I hope the student who wrote that editorial has not been leaned on either.

On a different tack, I'm pleased to see the successive posting position of Soilwork and Cocktails so we can put a face to that cock.

Stories like that are why I left Indiana. I know Woodburn well. . . a conservative wasteland. It's to the "right" of Fort Wayne (figuratively and literally).

Indiana. . . the state that gave us Dan Quayle.

Really, can ignorant statements contribute to the whole discussion? The response to transfer the teacher was appalling and I condemn them completely for doing so,But idiotic typical generalizations don't reflect well on you but that you're absolutely not funny when you're shrill.I don't condemn the whole heartland for the ignorance of some.....boy you have a mature view on the subject.Way to win friends and influence people, even though I know it wasn't meant literally...I think.

Illinois is midwest,so is Ohio...yes,compassion and tolreance and acceptance should be the message, but it's not everyone there, and we should keep spreading the good word there and helping tiose who are with us there!Don't condemn the actions of all for that of some....we are a better community than that.If Masrtin Luther King ignited a serious social revolution through non-violent social action, even with much more to go,we can fight the closed minded, intolerant bigots and remain honorable and righteous!

this is why i hated living in indiana..........

Moderate Democrat governors and senators Birch and Evan Bayh's Indiana? There is a lot of homosexuality in African- American opiinion.Do we concurrently implicate all of them, though?Of course not.It is very painful to be gay in a small town, but here where I live, ethnically diverse Jersey City, there is a lot of homophobia at my workplace, among my neighbors and community.Wherever it exists, condemn it,fight it,help those who support equal rights for ALL under the law.But don't rip any particular group or region,it's easy to divide rather than unite and seek common ground in unity. Let's fight the good fight and we will prevail ultimately...|

She let a student print an article that adovacted againest discrimnation?! How DARE she?

Get over yourself. I'm so obviously kidding that I practically sky-wrote it.

I mean, I invoked the name of LaToya Jackson... is it possible to talk about her in a non-satirical way?

I hang my head in shame!oops! !oops! .

This kind of crap goes on here (in Indiana) A LOT more than you know. Now that my last reason for staying here (my sister) is moving away in 10 days, it's my turn.

Would someone please just tell me where I should move to?? (please be kind). :help:

Without going on a whirlwind tour of the US visiting 20 or 30 cities, this has been a tough decision for me. I've traveled enough to know something first hand about a few cities, but this seems like an awfully big decision to just throw a dart at a map.

As a retired high school teacher myself, I can vouch for the fact that there has always been a small number of bigoted loud mouthed parents who know exactly what buttons to push with the school district trustees to get things like this to happen.

Like there's no homophobia in your neck of the woods, righttttt.... if you exclude the occasional near-fatal gay bashing in West Hollywood.

Not to mention all those right wing nut-job politicians in SoCal...

EDIT: OK, you want to talk schools? Just a quick little Google turns up:

Can I move first? Try to go around St. Louis and Chicago. They are actually gay friendly (well Chicago obviously moreso than STL because of size.)

Do I have to say I'm kidding?

Oh, and fuck that. The teacher shouldn't have signed shit. Call GLAAD and maybe they can foot the bill for her attorney. What a crock.
