Ever since I switched to firefox I have been having problems connecting to msn messenger. I've tried removing the thing and starting over but still, I get the same message: windows has detected a problem and needs to quit. Does anyone have any advice about how to fix this problem. Anything would be greatly recieved as my help won't work either.

I use firefox and don't seem to have much problem. On occasion will get that message and many times when I click the OK button, the window goes away but the MSN messenger keeps working. Go figure.

When you remove it and reinstall it, did you reboot your computer? Whether or not it asks you to do so, you should reboot when installing any new software. Sometimes the computer just doesn't "see" the program until you do so. That may help. Know that most of these "instant messenger" programs are real memory hogs. That could be another thing because they stay resident in your memory and if they are eating too much memory, depending on your version of Windows, Windows will just shut it down. Wish I could be of more help but maybe someone else has an idea or two. Also, I'm seeing more and more Firefox problems on here. Seems like ever since they have come out with a rash of updates, there are a lot of problems.

I re started the computer after re installing messenger and did a disk clean up. Still I keep getting that message windows has detected a problem and needs to close. I wish they'd let me know what the problem was so I could fix it! Maybe the problem does lie in firefox, using internet explorer I never encountered a single problem with messenger. The annoying thing is, firefox is clearly faster than explorer.

Hi thanks for your help, 2.0.0.5 is the version that I have and I only just downloaded it last week so I think it has all the latest updates.

Thanks again, i'm sorry for being a pain.

The exact message is: Windows Live Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvienience.

Below that it say windows has created an error report but everytime I click the "send error report" button, nothing happens except the program closes.

It just kind of happens when I click on the little icon to sign in, the box appears for me to type in my password and then the two little messenger symbols start to go around in a circle. All seems to be fine and the list of who's online comes up but then just like clockwork, the error message pops up and it closes down. I have been in touch with someone from windows messenger by e mail but all the things she asked me to do haven't worked either. I'm just now clutching at straws as to what exactly went wrong. The other problem is, ever since I downloaded firefox, I haven't been able to get internet explorer to work so I think the best thing to do is either a system restore, or get rid of firefox completely.

Does it show that i'm not very good with computers? ;)

I just tried the run and then typed what you told me to and deleted appropriate file, tried msn messenger again and still got the same message. I did manage to look at the error report but apart from a few numbers there was just a mandatory script from microsoft about their software and secrecy. It said: error signature: Appname msnmsgr. exe Appver 8.1.1.78.0 and a few more like that.

I am running CA security centre.

I deleted msn messenger cache on the advice of the woman from microsoft but to no avail.

I'm using msn messenger Live, it's the latest version.

sorry to answer your question i'm using internet explorer ver 7. no added toolbars or plug ins though.

Well I managed to sort it out without realising how exaclty i'd done it. I went into control panel and the set program access and defaults tab. Somehow msn messenger and internet explorer were not being allowed to launch (I don't know who has been messing around with the computer). Thankfully though, all is now well and I can chat away for as long as I want!

Thank you muchly again (*8*)
