the "delete" key?

not sure what exactly you are looking for...

Highlight the folder and while holding down the "shift" key on your keyboard, press the "del" (delete) key.

Directory-be-gone!

You could write a script to parse all folders and look for contents. However, some directories may be empty, but needed for an application to function properly. For example, if you had nothing on your desktop, removing the folder could cause problems.

What message do you receive when you attempt to delete the folders?

I found 2 programs. I prefer the first program
I could use such a program too. Do I see this right, the empty folders aren't automatically deleted but first listed to have a look at them? That will help keeping empty system folders that are needed by Windows.

As for the second problem, is it an external harddrive that came with preinstalled backup software? The icons look like installation archives. If you always install your programs on drive C:, I don't understand what they're doing in J:.

I never knew people cared that much about empty folders

There's a program that finds long file names so they don't interfere with various utilities. I have this problem with some backup and file management programs.

This identifies files with long file names and provides a place for you to shorten them manually. I suppose you could delete them instead. You specify the length. If you're not sure, guess and try it . Nothing gets deleted automatically, and it's quick.

^ hu? While I don't think it's a "great" program, it's by no way a scam or a "fake virus". It's a legitimate program. If it works for you, no need for the urgent uninstall "advice".

Uninstall it anway. CCleaner is more up to date.

Try Unlocker. You should be able to use it and see what processes are locking the directory. THen, if you want, you can unlock the folder and remove it.

I do have another problem. I have these long file name folders on my external hard drive. I dont know how to delete the files. Ive had these for awhile and I dont know or remember how it appeared. ...

I think it's worth mentioning that those cryptic long-filename-folders are (usually) remainders of some setup (i see a dot net install). That said, it might be difficult to simply delete them because you don't own that folder (the system does). Has to do with rights and such. They're usually safe to delete (once the installation is done). Admin rights should solve some of the deleting problems. Do you know how to view the so called Permissions of a folder?

The other thing concerning 'in-use' files or folders .. It might have something to do with your virusscanner not releasing them to you untill it has been scanned. Does -briefly !! - shutting down your antivirus protection make a difference? Beware, this is not a good idea if your computer still has malware on it. But you did a fresh install right? Oh, BTW, unlocker is indeed the solution to this problem.

I don't think it is a good idea to delete stuff automatically.

It is like tidy up the house. It takes time.
The best way is to re-install windows, then maintain it by tidying it up often. :)

Sometimes unlocker is goofy like that.

However, if it's not showing any file locks on the folder there may be something else going on.

I have run into virii/malware that can create files/folders that have invalid names. So when one tries to remove them, it says it can't find them.

Download a live linux CD and boot into the live OS and see if you can remove them that way.
