Uh-oh, he's in trouble now. Let's see him get out of this one without being excommunicated! Things just aren't going right for the GOP.

Prominent Catholics Slam Boehner, Call GOP Policies "Anti-Life"

Oh my goodness. It looks like the Republicans may have awakened certain members of the Catholic Church to who they really are:

Dear Mr. Speaker,

We congratulate you on the occasion of your commencement address to The Catholic University of America. It is good for Catholic universities to host and engage the thoughts of powerful public figures, even Catholics such as yourself who fail to recognize (whether out of a lack of awareness or dissent) important aspects of Catholic teaching. We write in the hope that this visit will reawaken your familiarity with the teachings of your Church on matters of faith and morals as they relate to governance.

Mr. Speaker, your voting record is at variance from one of the Church’s most ancient moral teachings. From the apostles to the present, the Magisterium of the Church has insisted that those in power are morally obliged to preference the needs of the poor. Your record in support of legislation to address the desperate needs of the poor is among the worst in Congress. This fundamental concern should have great urgency for Catholic policy makers. Yet, even now, you work in opposition to it.

Ouch.

I guess he'll just have to rely on his narrow eyed Baptist base from here on in.

It never ceases to amaze me how liberal your layman American Catholic is compared to the RCC, at least in my lifetime anyway.

The Roman Catholic Church in America has always been very left leaning on economic and peace issues and the death penalty. The only conservative political positions the Church has traditionally taken that I can think of is abortion and homosexuality. American Bishops have consistently supported welfare state policies, opposed the nuclear arms race and the death penalty, and supported labor unions.

FINALLY!!!!

I have been waiting with baited breath for the Roman Catholic Church to speak out on matters that concern the poor. For (at least) the last 10 years, it seems all we've heard from the RCC is about abortion and homosexuality. These are two subjects that the Bible says very little about. But the Bible goes on and on ad nauseum about "love the poor", "help the poor", "feed the hungry", "clothe the naked", "heal the sick."

The GOP policies are only "pro-life" for fetuses.

Once the baby exists the womb:

-it better have a "traditional family" with two opposite sex parents
-it better not be poor
-it better be able to afford health care
-it better be able to afford college
-it better not have brown skin
-it better not be gay
-it better have religious parents and be raised Christian
-it better have good bootstraps

The mainstream media rarely covers the Roman Catholic Church's views on anything but abortion and homosexuality. Probably because the mainstream media is corporate owned and doesn't want to give prominence to the progressive economic teachings of the Church. For example, here is an excerpt from the American Conference of Catholic Bishops' Labor Day statement last year:

Wage Fairness and a New Social Contract

In too many places across America, workers are not being fully paid for their labor. National reports tell of factory workers whose time begins with the start of the conveyor belt not their arrival; of retail workers who are “clocked out” and then required to restock or take inventory; and wait staff whose employers do not give them their tips. Some unscrupulous employers ignore weak and inadequate laws that forbid such unfair practices in order to increase the bottom line. Families struggling to make ends meet cannot have wage earners shortchanged on overtime or not get paid for all the hours they work. The dignity of the person is diminished when poor or middle-class people are denied their full wage or just compensation for their hard work. A good job at good wages for everyone who is willing and able to work should be our national goal and a moral priority.

In light of this and similar issues, perhaps the call for a new “social contract” should be cast in the context of a globalized economy and seek a renewed development of the relations among the three sectors of market, state, and civil society. This new social contract could emphasize the roles and responsibilities of civil society, which would include, among others, labor unions (which the Church has supported since Rerum Novarum), and also business associations, universities, think tanks, other social, economic, and cultural groups, and all those who seek to add vision and hope to a national and global economic dialogue.

Not exactly consistent with the GOP platform.

It isn't just America. The RCC has a well known history for being towards "social justice", especially labor movements. They are also anti-war unlike some other Christian 'sects'. I spent a whole year in high school taking a class called "Catholic Social Teaching" so I know much about the RCC's stance on many social issues. Yes they do 'hiccup' on issues of sexuality and interfaith initiatives (Catholic priests will outright refuse to perform a wedding if it does not take place in a Catholic church between two heterosexual, Catholic-baptized people), but outside of that, they are better than some other sects and religions.

and a tight ass!!!

Did you go to the link with the whole letter, including signatures? There are some weighty folks on there!

OTOH, there are a lot of "Huh? Who?" names, too.

Though Boehner will probably blow it off unless his bishop steps up to affirm it -- which IMO he ought to.

Well known RNC expression: "Love the fetus, hate the child." #-o

Yup! They love to blather on about protecting life..... That is until the fetus is born. Then the RNCs attitude is "fuck those babies"! They provide no money if they had their way for sex Ed, infant mortality reduction of which America ranks horrifically bad, children health or schooling, nor for alternative programs like adoption or orphanages instead of abortion. As always they are hypocrites to the nth degree.
