I've recently been diagnosed with PC and the recommendation is for a complete prostectomy (removal). I've been researching options but side effects etc are not pleasant.
Today I'm having a CT scan of the pelvic/abdomen + Nuclear Bone Scan.
Does anyone have any experience/suggestions on treatments/success rates of PC (my PSA is 12.6 and my biopsy identified cancer in three test areas of the right side of the prostate)
Any advise would be appreciated.
 
I am sorry to hear the diagnosis. I myself am dealing with lung cancer and have just been told that it has advanced into some lesions on the brain. I am not all that familiar with prostate cancer but try www.nih.gov or http://www.cancer.gov/cancer_information/cancer_type/ I have found that these sites have some great information as well as supported links. That's a bitch! I wish you the best. I haven't been through it. As a male, I am concerned. I've heard about a method where they put radioactive seeds in the prostate. Check out support groups on the net. Take care.
 
I have had that surgery and after 6 years everything is still very good. PSA is as low as possible. Investigate all the possibilities that are being offered for your particular situation (everyone does not do best with the same thing).

New treatments suggest that surgery is the last option. There are many many alternatives. Do your homeowrk online, and get more than one opinion on your options! Have been dealing with "you could get cancer, since your PSA levels are high", and see the "friendly" urologist now every 6 months. my doctor thinks that surgery should be the last resort! As you know, the PSA test is not as accurate as it should be. There are alternatives in the works.

Been dealing with this for 4 years now, so I know what your going through...(well almost know)! Have read all the treatments and alternatives possible. Efergivende is cool, I'd PM him and chat with him. Nothing like chatting with someone who has gone through it! Best of luck to you!
 
My partner had a prostatectomy last summer. His PC was caught very early, and it had not spread. The procedure was done laparoscopically with robots, and it left him with only five very tiny scars in a semi-circle on his belly. They're almost invisible now. He has not yet regained 100% of his erectile function, but we're having a lot of fun with his physical therapy. In fact, we're having sex a lot more since the surgery.

I realize that my sweetie was very fortunate and that not every man will have the prognosis he has...but that's my experience with PC.

Regardless of which path you choose, you're in our thoughts and prayers, buddy.
 
My first PSA was 7, at that time (last december) I was refered to my Urologist (a really great woman, I don't like men) any way she tested it and it came out 10 but the digital exam came out fine. They wanted to do (a) biopsy (it was actually 10 at the same time) and nothing came out, but she is sure I have cancer. So three months later I did another PSA it was 5. And just a month ago I did the most recent 26. She put me on antibiotics and then in about 2 weeks I have to do another PSA.

I'm sorta rambling here, I guess what I want to say is I'm with you and well, do your homework, cuz they actually don't just go by PSA. Good Luck
 
Thankyou everyone for your thoughts and alternatives. I've done quite lot of research on PC but it is generally so confusing and the "by products" of some treatments are quite scary !!
My Urologist advised me to stay away from HIFU, stating that it was still an untested option. Has anyone any knowledge of HIFU?
I underwent the CT Scan & Nuclear Bone Scan yesterday only to be told that the results would not be available for 2 weeks as the physician who interprets the results would not be available until then - I was furious as they could have let me know that beforehand and I would have had the tests done in Melbourne (results in two days) and not in a regional centre !!
 
I just had my annual exam and was told my prostate is enlarged and am awaiting psa results. Yeah.
 
Sympathies. I had a "scare" two years ago and had to think about the "what if" options. I had a high PSA and had (I don't know what the technical term is) what seemed to be a nail gun with 13 needles shoved up my ass. The biopsy came back OK, but I my cum was red, then brown for weeks.

The advice I was given was that you should absolutely avoid surgery unless it is imperative. Surgery pulls all the nerves away and will probably leave you impotent. Can't you get some radio / chemo therapy instead?

Just to let you know that I had the laproscopic surgery 7 days ago (home now but still very uncomfortable - catheter still in !). Appears the cancer was contained in the capsule (two specks a bit "so so"). I'm having the catheter out tomorrow and will then see how the continence is.
Over the whole journey we discovered there isn't a great deal of info. specifically targetted towards Gay Men - no support groups identified !!!. so if anyone is looking at the PC issue feel free to contact me and I can at least give them an insight into what research is around.

Prostatitis an cause an emergent elevation in PSA.

PSA is a very soft number, best understood in serials rather than in isolation: it's the jump over the previous year's PSA, not the PSA number itself. A jump from 1 to 2 (i.e. 100% increase) may indicate a problem, and warrents a biopsy.

Type 2 diabetes (DM2) is a major risk factor for prostate CA, just as it is for many other cancers. DM2 is characterized by a prolonged period (several years) of elevated insulin levels (hyperinsulinemia) prior to the onset of frank disease. Insulin and Insulin derived growth factor are mitogens -- agents that causes cells to divide. Cancer is essentially uncontrolled cell division: cells that are dividing that shouldn't. So mitogens like insulin just add fuel to the fire.

Anybody taking insulin shots should definitely add sensitizer meds (metformin/'glucophage', Avandia, etc.) if they haven't already, in order to decrease their insulin requirements.

Smoking may be a risk factor, as it is a risk factor in the other urinary track cancers (renal cell, bladder). The cancer causing agents in cigarette smoke (anthracene hydrocarbons a.k.a. benzopyrenes or incomplete products of combustion -- or smoke) are excreted through the urinary track. However, the prostate's exposure to them is probably pretty limited.

Vitamin D is particularly protective against prostate cancer. Vitamin D is an anti-mitogen -- it inhibits cell division. The most effective way to maintain adequate vitamin D levels is 10-15 minutes exposure to UVB light on the face, forearms/hands. You can get this by taking a walk at lunchtime during the spring and summer. However, dermatologist freak out at this suggestion! During the winter, purchase a vitamin D supplement and take approx 1000 IU/day.

Congratulations on making it through the toughest part. The fact that your cancer was contained is very good news, indeed. Keep us posted on your progress, buddy!
 
Best wishes. Prostate cancer grows slowly and as time goes on it is unclear at what point it is important to operate on it. Every man over the age of 85 (I think... I may be off) has prostate cancer but will die of other causes first so it is a non-issue. Anyway, glad everything came out alright and good luck with the catheter removal.
