I know that drinking protein shakes is to have some protein in your body so you can burn when you're working out (not completely sure how it works but I think it's around there)
But because I want to lose weight by working out, do I need protein shakes because I just want to burn that fat away?

Muscle burns fat. The more muscle you have the more potential for fat burning you possess.

Personally, I think protein shakes are totally bogus and a waste of money. Many many many of my friends will argue. But I've never had one a day in my life and have a body better than most who do. A balanced diet is all you need. If you're a vegetarian and don't get a lot of protein, then maybe a help. Personally, I think it is a huge industry that is nothing more than a lot of hype.

Maybe protein shakes aren't a great idea, actual protein rich meals after a work out are ideal. But if you are like me, and hate making meals after working out, a protein bar can go a long ways. Mostly the greatest effect I get from it is not being sore after working out if I overworked a little.

However, it's kinda hard to find a brand that you'll find you can stand the taste of, time after time. A lot of them taste like newspaper, and mud. But it's really trial and error until you find what suits you.

Bogus? Not necessarily...Of course excercising and diet play a huge factor in weight management, having a protein shake can help speed up the process in losing weight. Finding the right shake can be a difficult task. I tried many, but I recently I was recommended one, it's called Muscle Milk, the one I use is the Light version, It's only got about 25g of protein, relatively low, but it also serves as a meal replacement. It's great when your not hungry but need to eat, and it's great after a awesome workout. Most importantly of all protein shakes IT TASTES GREAT!!! Chocolate is tasty actually. Try it. I've lost 5lbs and look pretty cut.

You're right. I cudn't find any studies that proves its not bogus. Dang....](*,)

Diunaylomo, consider checking out John Venuto's advice on BurntheFat.com he has some excellent advice about diet and the like.
I've checked out many reviews of this guy and couldn't find anything negative. Venuto believes like many of the previous posts that protein shakes are a waste of money and not beneficial. His advice is a low fat diet (5 meals a day) combined with weight lifting and aerobic exercise.

My boyfriend is a body builder and he swears by this guy. Hope this helps!

If you are actually doing weight/strength training, then protein shakes can help. Have a scoop of whey about 30min before the workout and another immediately following the workout. Then use real foods for the rest of the day.

Again, only use whey if you are lifting weights. Since it's in a liquid form, the protein shakes are great because your muscles absorb the protein much faster than eating solid foods; so the nutrients your muscle lost after exercised, will be replenished. Don't drink protein shakes if you're only doing cardio to workout.

Someone recommended "muscle milk". That will not help you, especially since you're trying to loose weight. Muscle milk is extremely fattening and is mostly used by those skinny people who are trying to bulk up.

Good luck!!

LOL.... sorry. I couldn't help but laugh. You should do a commercial for these people. Clearly that is what they say. But it doesn't have any good medical basis for these claims. First off, proteins aren't the best source of "nutrients". Muscle needs glucose just like all cells so complex carbs are actually the best source. The protein helps to rebuild muscle. And that doesn't happen right after you work out.

I know it is a multimillion dollar business... but still doesn't make any sense and not proven to help a damn bit. All I can think about is what if all of that money were spent for an actual good cause. Think of the possibilities!

Possibility: the exercise industry supports our belief that what we are what we eat.

My grandfather had an excellent body! He lived a long time. He also ate bacon and eggs every morning and a pint of ice cream every Saturday night.

Nearly every single day of his life he was up at four o'clock to start the chores that must be done before the sun went down. He worked the family dairy farm.

Try to up your exercise and I think your body will help you with the rest. Eat your food, don't drink it.

Oh god. Now I had better get the gym before I make myself a hypocrite!

I cant gain weight to save my life. I eat all the time but to eat "real" food is very time consuming, and living alone can get expensive. I make meals and buy groceries, more or less daily but i also have a protien shake either right after a work out, or just befor bed (sometimes its like a my dessert, blended wiht a scoop of icecream and a banana) and i keep my weight on some much better wiht the shakes. if i skip a few i can tell. I think for me its just an easy way to take in the extra calories and or protein... but ultimetly, like everything in diet and excersise everyboy is different. (musclemilk is really tasty!! and BSN make a whole line of suppliments but cant recall the protein powder... chocolate is good... vanilla is gross )

so nip/tug, do a self study for me. Figure out how many calories you take in with the shake. Cut the shake out and add those calories to your diet with normal healthy food. And then see if you "see a difference". I'd bet not.
