The Golden Compass author Philip Pullman has vowed to stop undertaking school visits in Britain - because of the U.K. government's "sinister" new laws to ensure adults entering classroom are not paedophiles.

Good old equality. Helping a government make money.

Seems to me it will harm kids more than help them. In more ways than one.

This is just the latest ploy to make citizens pay where government messed up.

As far as I know, the British government had already registrated sex-offenders, and then consistently neglected to stop child-rapists with multiple convictions from working in school after school after school and re-offending.

That is a new law? I thought all people who do work in schools had to be checked. And I never knew they had to pay.

The agency who had to do that messed up multiple times (probably because it was an inside job), and now it's the teachers' responsibility.

I remember reading something about his famous book. From what I remember it's not really fit for children anyway. It's an anti-Christian rant.

How are those unfit for children? Anti-everything else books are read to Christian kindergartners on a daily basis.

It is the law here in the states. I work in public schools, and personally feel the law is appropriate. Kind of gets tiring having to tell adults to stop wandering the halls during school hours without checking into the office first, and if you want to volunteer in some capacity you have to have a background check done; cost $1 here and takes a day to complete.

They may be pushing it by extending it to authors who are coming in for a story hour kind of situation, and it is way too expensive, but I doubt Mr. Pullman is short of cash.

And personally I don't see how children are going to be affected by a govt. policy; do they sit at the breakfast table reading the daily news saying, "Damn Bureaucratic Fascist trying to scare us kids".

I personally believe children are protected too much in the states and in the schools, but we have had instances where people wanted to be volunteers in the school, but were rejected due to a criminal history that contained felony charges.
