I'm a huge Prince fan. I've worn through at least two vinyl copies and one CD of the Purple Rain soundtrack.

It shouldn't be #1, though.

"Purple Rain" has some pretty timeless songs whereas "Saturday Night Fever" while it has some disco classics, they are just that. It's a great moment in time but all of it as a whole is not spectacular.

It's not about just sales or exposure its about what's held up. There's no "Purple Rain", "Let's Go Crazy" or ANYTHING like the unique and groundbreaking "When Doves Cry" (one of the ONLY pop records to top the chart without a bassline EVER) on the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack. You will hear "Purple Rain" 20 years from now for sure. I'm not sure the same can be said of "Staying Alive". "How Deep Is Your Love" certainly...but "Jive Talkin"...not so much.

Just my 2 cents...and the people have spoken. It is what it is.

At the risk of being redundant...

Which is why Purple Rain should be #2. The Harder They Come should be #1

Purple Rain is an amazing album, but to me, it's not much of a "soundtrack". It's just a collection of the songs that Prince played in the concert scenes in the movie. The music from The Harder They Come is, to me, more perfectly linked to the film.

I think some will be wondering where the following STK lie -

Grease
The Bodyguard
Waiting To Exhale
Footloose
Flashdance
The Lion King
Pocahontas
The Sound of Music
and more...

Sales-wise, I heard Grease is the word.

Saleswise, SNF is the word. Estimates put SNF at 40 million, Bodyguard at 37 million, Dirty Dancing at 32 million, Titanic at 29 million, and Grease at 27 million.

I thought Purple Rain sucked.

The Album or the Movie? and why do you think it sucks? i mean whats so bad about a revolutionary album and movie, ya the acting wasnt all that good, a hard core Prince fan such as myself doesnt care about all that!
