ok, so i have had tendonitis for almost a year, its not that bad anymore since i changed jobs, but i tried doing push up for the first time in a while and shooting pains went up both arms, i couldnt do more than two! my arms are really hurting now. Do you think i should just do push ups through the pain so itll strengthen my arm more or what?

No....don't do that, it won't make the tendons or your muscles any stronger. It would be pain for the sake of it.

Rest your tendons, take some NSAIDs and see your doctor about a steroid injection into the offending tendons. Which tendons are affected out of interest?

the ones from my fingers to wrist and from wrist to forearm on both arms, whats NSAID's? lol

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, e.g. ibubrofen, aspirin, naproxen etc, all of wich are available OTC. There are many others for which a prescription may be required. You have to take care with some of them as they can be very unkind to your stomach! I am sure you can get more info by googling NSAIDS. Whilst I am not all that keen on steroids, I did allow some to be injected into my shoulder when it packed up, and it worked miracles.

If you have tendonitis where you say you have, doing pushups will aggravate it. I suggest it may be time to deal with the fundamental problem, i.e. the tendonitis, and more importantly, what causes it, e.g. poor posture for hours on end at a computer.

oh thanks, i did go to the dr. for it through work, i was a cashier for 3 years and the repition caused it. i thought it was all healed, until today...

For once I am with Ben here. It is a BIG no-no.

Take things easy. Other wise you will have problems for years, if not for life.

is there any exercises i can do in place of push-ups to get the same effect?

I doubt it. However, you could try some 180 degree and 90 deg curls using say 2 kgs - 4 or 5 lbs. Don't rush out and buy expensive weights. People always seem to have a few weights under the bed or in the bottom of the closet. Or use something that approximates that weight. See how you go. Be careful not to overdo it.

When people agree with me, why do they always qualify it with the prefix "for once"?

I am right more often that I am wrong.

Have you tried using fists instead of palms? I have some tendonitis around my wrists and can't do pushups with my palms because it stretches too much. For therapy, you might want to try hot wax. It's kind of messy, so I don't do it personally. If your insurance will pay for it, you should go to a physical therapist to get some ultrasound and deep tissue massage.

You need to rest them for a while, and also consider wearing those ace wrist bandages during your daily activities. This will keep the wrist from excessively bending.
