On November 1, 1972, Standard Oil of New Jersey launched a unified, national brand name to replace all the various regional names used after the 1911 monopoly breakup of the company.
Where I grew up, the name was "Humble Oil and Refining Company", with the "Esso" logo added for recognition across the east coast states.
"Exxon" was chosen as the rebranding name to be used nationwide. To announce the new name, the Esso/Humble Oil Tiger was brought out of retirement and returned as the Exxon Tiger.
