It would do a great deal for Russia if Putin were to release the strong arm hold he has on that government but don't expect it too soon. Despite the protest many still believe he is the only viable candidate to run the country.

How does the election system work, if the top two people can just decide they're going to switch jobs? I'm trying to picture an equivalent in the U.S. -- like Hillary and Barrack announcing they're switching positions.
 
This trend of election rigging around the world is getting very disturbing.

Iran is bad enough, but now Russia? As power hungry as Putin is, I don't see him giving up control.

He won't. But, I don't believe he is going to survive the combination of a massive uprising and the renewed focus of the international community on his manipulation of votes in his favor.

The street demonstrations (much less than massive) protesting alleged ballot rigging is hardly evidence of a popular revolt against Putin rather Western media hype calculated to embarrass Putin.

Allegations of fraud in elections has also been evident in more recent years in the USA when recalling Florida 2000.
 
Putin's vacation is over ... he will be back in full power no matter what anyone does.

Most of the allegations in the US is partisan hype trying to undermine the legitimacy of the other side for political gain. It is a very disturbing and dangerous trend in US politics that threatens the very foundations of the system IMHO.

Are you saying that there is no truth to the voting fraud allegations in the Florida ballot of 2000?

If you are, I will remind you that there are many Florida voters who do not believe that the fraud allegations were invented by the media or, anyone else rather reflect reality.

Voter dissatisfaction is not the same thing as deliberate fraud. The 2000 Florida election was a laughable farce that should never have happened and I blame both sides for it but Gore the most for putting his political ambitions ahead of the good of the nation and not putting an end to it sooner.

There was a few actual attempts at fraud using procedural trickery, the attempt to throw out military ballots for example and a poorly managed purge of the voter rolls before the election may have been manipulated but most of it was procedural errors and stupidity being hyped to insane levels and once the circus got started the Florida Supreme Court literally rewriting election laws on the fly which is almost criminal during an election. Near as I can tell most of the attempted gaming of the system during the election itself was coming from the people shouting 'fraud' the loudest, and using it to justify their own tampering.

The entire thing was a shining tribute to why politicians and political parties should not be in charge of the voting process or much of anything else to be honest.

In the end it all turned out to be pointless and highly damaging. The vote recounts that Gore wanted (the selective nature of these recounts were themselves an attempt to game the system) were eventually done afterward by third parties (mostly news organizations) and the results were that Gore lost in every scenario unless you were willing to completely throw out the election laws and rules and make up votes.

Yet that circus was used to claim that Bush was not a legal president for his entire presidency even after he won reelection. And cries of vote fraud and that the other side is stealing the election has become a staple of the elections since. This has now evolved further to just declaring the current administration invalid for any stupid reason (bogus birth certificates). A Representative Democracy CANNOT survive if the people come to believe that the government is not a legitimate government of the people so this cycle of claiming the government invalid ("He is NOT my President!") for partisan gain is a cancer on our system far more dangerous than the silly games that party zealots play in the every election.

That is not what you claimed when we were reading reports of the collapse and reasons behind it from Greece?

I lived through it too and read the article and followed the issue and I said there was some legitimate issues but that the affair as a whole was far overblown and extended far too long for partisan political hype as both sides got in on the shouting match of trying to out accuse the other of stealing the election. And I still stand by my opinion that the harm the whole mess has done to the foundations of our democracy far out weigh any benefits that was gained from it.
