Two policeman walked up to the house. It was dark, late at night, and they had a bit of trouble finding the path that led to the large, colonial house. One knocked on the door, firmly, and stepped back, waiting for it to open. Moments later, it did, slowly at first, but then it flung open.
“Oh, officers,” said Mrs. Danielson, still clearly drunk, as she was swaying and slurring her words, “You’re here. Did you catch…Mandy? Heeheehee,” she began laughing, falling onto her knees. “My daughter’s name isn’t Mandy, silly, it’s…Amanda!” She laughed some more, grabbing the one cop’s leg.
“Ma’am, we didn’t go over to the Johnson residence, because the woman who answered your phone call could easily tell that you were intoxicated with alcohol. If it were just that, we probably wouldn’t have come here tonight, but-“
“Wait…a minute…” she said, using the wall to push herself up. Even standing, she was flimsy and barely able to stay up. “You…didn’t try…to find…Mandy?”
“Ma’am,” she said, holding out his hands, “you’re under arrest.” He was holding a pair of hand cuffs.
“Officer…” She looked at his name tag, which said Michael. “Can I call you Michelle? …. I know it may LOOK, like I’m drunk, but…I’m not! Look, I can walk in a straight line.” She began to try, but walked right into the wall. “Excuse me, officer,” she said, sniggering.
“Ma’am, you’re not under arrest for intoxication. You’re under arrest for illegal adoption.”

“Thanks so much for letting me stay with you last night,” Sara said, holding her purse and bag, looking for her cell phone. “I just couldn’t stay with my mom after our fight.”
“Dear, it’s no biggie. You would do the same for me.” She smiled. “It’s going to be fun today, with Max, you know.”
“I thought you were going to try and ‘slip’ the fact that he’s gay out to the whole school,” Sara said, smiling.
“I am. I SAID, ‘it’s going to be fun today’.” She returned the smile.
As Sara laughed, she noticed something down the hall. Oh no, she thought. “Uhm, hey, let’s go down this way.”
“No, I have to go down here for a book anyway.”
She started walking down the hallway.
“Amanda-wait!”
A senior brunette passed Amanda, looking at her. “Slut,” she said, looking at her.
“Excuse me?” Amanda said, her face in shock.
The girl walked away, as Sara ran up.
“It’s nothing, just a…” But before Sara could finish her lama excuse, Amanda spotted the very thing that Sara was trying to keep hidden from her: aNOTHER poster:
AMANDA’S HOUSE IS A SEXHOUSE
Underneath was the picture of Max in his boxers, running from her house.
BLOWJOBS, HANDJOBS, ANAL, AND MORE, ALL FREE. WHAT A SWEATHEART<3
Amanda’s face was in absolute rage. “I’m going to rip that girl into SHREADS!”
“Actually,” a voice said, out of no where, “it was me, who put that poster up. Alexis merely took the picture for me.” Ryan walked up to the two girls, obviously getting a kick out of this. Although the hall was still loud with talk and laughter, everyone was also paying attention to the three of them.
“Do you…do you think this is funny? Do you think this is…what the FUCK is wrong with you?!”
“I am trying to break you and Max up. I want him and he deserves better than you. You’re just a toy to him, he doesn’t-“
“Oh, shut up! I broke up with him. You can have him. But, I’m going to tell everyone that you and he are gay. So be prepared.”
“Think about that, my sexually unintelligent friend; if you tell people that he’s gay, they’re going to think you only know that because you slept with him. Do you want that? No. Don’t say anything, and this will die down. Pretty quickly, probably.”
She frowned, glaring at him. He was right, however. She would be the slut of the school if she told everyone that. “You’re a bitch.”
Max walked over to them, mad. He noticed Amanda’s anger as well. “Dude, your GIRLFRIEND is an asshole. I can’t believe she put that picture of me everywhere.”
“Oh, shut up, Max. At least you’re the hottie in this situation. No one’s going to say, ‘Ha, you have abs!’ I’m now a slut, because of you.”
“Oh, this is MY fault?” He saw a group of girls looking over at him, one holding the picture, and the other five looking for others.
“Yes, it IS-did you say girlfriend? Are you and Alexis dating?” She switched glances from Max to Ryan.
“No…well…I don’t know. But that concerns me and her…and Drew?” Once he had looked up, he noticed Alexis, looking pretty in her yellow spaghetti strap shirt and pink mini-skirt, and Drew, very near her, laughing, smiling.
“Excuse me,” Amanda and Ryan said at the same time. They looked at each other and both walked over to the two.
Awkward and alone, Amanda looked at Max. “So…have you been working out?”
“Alexis!” Amanda pushed her into the locker. But this time, Alexis pushed her back. “Get your kinky hands off of me, you slut,” she said, obviously in disgust.
“Oh, that’s it,” Amanda said, walking over to her. Just as they were about to fight, Ryan and Drew interfered.
“What is going on?” Drew asked, looking back and forth.
“This girl put took a picture of Max in his boxers, AND insulted me, TWICE, through a poster. Is this the girl you want to be dating? A bitch like her?”
“She put up a picture of him in his boxers?” A small, slight gleam was in his eye.
“Yeah, well, she dumped a glass of juice ALL OVER me. I wanted to get her back! Is THAT the girl you want to be dating?” Amanda looked at her, eyebrow raised. “Yes, Amanda, I know you like him.”
“You know what-“
“Both of you, stop! If you’re going to be like this, I want neither of you. Goodbye.” He walked away, obviously flustered.
Both of the girls stood there, mad.
“So, what is up? You and I kiss and now you want to date Drew?”
“Ryan…I’m sorry! It’s just, I’m confused, and I have every right to be! One minute, you’re saying how you’re going to plot against Amanda to get in Max’s pants, and then, you’re making out with me! Are you gay? Are you straight? Are you bi? That’s why I’m interested in him, because you’re so mysterious, I have no idea what to do with you.”
“I…thought I liked him. Well…I know I still do, but…I DO like you as well. I want to go out with you, but I also like him…”
“Well you have to choose one of us. Him or me. I’m not one of those girls,” she looked at Amanda, “that don’t care how many different people her boyfriend is dating or having sex with. Choose: Ryan or me.”
He stood there, frozen. He liked Alexis. Max was amazing, sexually. “I choose…Max.”
She rolled her eyes. “And so, you can’t have me.” She walked past him, teary eyed.
Amanda and Ryan stood next to each other, and after a moment, they both walked in opposite directions.
***
Amanda sat at her desk, cell phone in her hand. The teacher was talking, but she wasn’t listening. Despite the fact that first period was always so boring, she also was devastated about the whole Max thing. He had been her first love, AND she was being called a whore.
“…partners. Go ahead.” Everyone got up as the teacher finished. Amanda looked around, doing the same, staying in the back so she knew what to do. They all went to the front of the room, looking at a small piece of paper. She pushed past some people until she got to the front. It listed partners for the giant science project that was coming up. Her mouth dropped as she saw her name and who she was next to.
“David Smith?!” She exclaimed. “Mrs. Fie, this is a joke, isn’t it?”
The woman smiled. “No, Amanda, it’s not. But this might do you some good. Maybe you’ll actually pass, now that you have extra help.”
“Oh, well, keep bring DIET Pepsi. It might do you some good. Maybe you’ll actually be ABLE to see your toes, now that you have extra help.”
The woman stood up, looking pissed. “Amanda Johnson, I’m sick of your crap.” But she sat down, doing nothing about it. Amanda gave her a look. She looked through the crowd of people and met the brown eyes of David Smith. He was a tall, surprisingly somewhat muscular dirty blonde, with big glasses. He appeared just as annoyed with his partner selection as she was.
He forced a smile. She didn’t return such a favor. “Just kill me now,” she said, looking up to the ceiling.
***
“So, I told my mom about you,” Sara said, arms around her waist.
Drew nodded. “And?”
“Well…we got into a huge fight and I crashed at Amanda’s house,” she said, smiling.
“Oh…is…she mad that we’re in the same school? Does she…does she not want to see me?” She could tell that he was hoping it wasn’t the latter.
“Actually, I have no idea. I started yelling at her too soon before I could even find out. She said she couldn’t afford two babies, or didn’t have the time for two – yeah – so she put you up for adoption. I’m so sorry. I bet she’d want to see you. If you want, I’ll bring you home today, to let you guys meet.”
“I told my dad about you. He…almost fainted.” He let out an awkward laugh. “He explained the whole story to me. He told me he felt bad for splitting us up. Apparently, your mom didn’t live here in Putnam back then. So when Dad and I moved here, a week ago, he didn’t expect to run into you. Yes, I really want to meet her.”
“She’d be so proud of you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, you’re smart. You’re like in every honors or accelerated class there is. And you’re athletic.”
He raised his eyebrow.
“Well, when you showed me your schedule, I saw you had the sports form under it, with basketball and hockey filled out…And…you’re very good looking. I’m sure she’d like that.”
He smiled, going a little pink in the face. “Why thank you.”
She laughed. “You’re cute too.” The loud speaker interrupted her, though:
SARA DANIELSON, PLEASE COME TO THE MAIN OFFICE, NOW. THANK YOU.
She shrugged. “I’ll meet you after last period.”
***
Sara walked in, and without a word, the secretary pointed to the phone, unhooked and sitting on the table. She picked it up. “Uhm…hello?”
The other end spoke for a moment, and her eyes went wide. “She’s WHERE?”
***
“This…is my house,” David said, taking her in.
Sara was making a face, teeth clenched, arms closely by her side. “Yeah, yeah, can we make this quick? I’d rather not be here for…too long.”
He rolled his eyes, nodding, and led the way to the living room.
Someone else was there, a pretty black girl. She was on the couch, reading a magazine.
“Mariah, what are you doing here?” David asked, looking at her.
“I’m just bored. I had nothing to do at my house, so I came here. Who’s your friend?” She asked, standing up, staring at Amanda.
“This is…Amanda. Amanda, this is my best friend, Mariah.”
“Not that it’s any of my business. Well, not that I care, I should say, but, why is she here? Doesn’t she go to school?”
“You can ask me, you know, I am capable of answering questions concerning myself. I don’t go to school. I was home schooled until last year.”
“Oh, this should be fun…” Poor Amanda, little do you know, but you’re probably having the most fun out of your other friends right now. Until next time, <3
