Queensland Flood crisis

I'm watching the reports on the news now, just heard that a 4 year old boy was swept away....

:(

Breaks my heart.

Heartbreaking indeed. Of the nine people who are confirmed dead, four (I believe) were children. Sixty six people remain missing, and of these, some are entire families. Sad and scary.

I live in Western Australia, but have several friends and family in Brisbane. Even without that, it's hard to see your country go through something like this. I've been watching Channel 9 news for most of the day and it really is such a horrific event. I couldn't imagine having your whole life, just being swept away in front of you.

Flooding in five states and bush fires burning in others...

Thanks Ozguy for keeping us informed. We have had a few reports in the press here, but as you may guess the horrid tragedy in Arizona here has seized most of the attention of the press to keep us informed.

We who are Anglicans here are already putting together our response. As one who has lived near rivers most of my life, I have experienced more than my share of floods and know it can be just a dreadful time. One can contact Episcopal Relief through ecusa.org.

BTW, that new avatar of yours Ozguy is hot. Love the rear view. If I could come by I would enjoy the visit.

Shep+..|

Aiding a fully-industrialized country? I highly doubt it's high on their agenda.

I just have to laugh at his question about the UN getting involved.
If they are sending money, why not i would say, but they can't do anything else.

When will the United Nations intervene?

What exactly would you have the UN do that isn't already being done by the appropriate local organizations?

Also, let me say it again, Australia is NOT cash-strapped, it's actually in a much better economic situation than both the United States and the United Kingdom.

It's not about money, wealthy or not. By willfully not assisting wealthy countries (that ironically fund the UN), they're turning a blind eye to fellow people.

The UN is just a horribly disillusioned organization and irrelevant to modern interests and people need to stop funding it.

UN relief is not an entitlement program. Its there for nations that cannot fund their own disaster relief.

It is NEEDS BASED.

I might make a donation. The videos I saw today showed a third world country. Australia is in my thoughts. The government has let the people down. All they can afford is a pathetic $1 million for the victims?
Australia's a small, wealthy country with plenty of precious metals and minerals.

The world doesn't come together for first world disasters such as Katrina. -.-

(And as others have pointed out, Australia is in a much better economic condition that the United States given the rising value of commodities.)

I fully sympathise with the people caught up in these dreadful events. But there is a reason why the indigenous peoples of Australia (and come to that, North America) were nomadic. They had the sense not to establish permanent settlements in such areas and moved the hell out of nature's way.
