Queensland Flood crisis

Current status
12 dead
43 missing with 9 of those feared dead

The coverage on the floods in Australia is slightly better than the Pakistani one. I find it just terrible that people like to pick and choose the disasters they want to feel sorry for. I read comments over blogs and journals of people feeling sorry about the animals in Queensland and yet there is this abysmal response on the suffering of young flood victims in Pakistan. Fuck, someone here is even asking for the UN to intervene this. Looks like the rich white one won.

Australia is a very capable country, and I'm pretty sure the strong Australians will pull through this terrible disaster. My thoughts and prayers are with the people affected by flood. :(

I fully sympathise with the people caught up in these dreadful events. But there is a reason why the indigenous peoples of Australia (and come to that, North America) were nomadic. They had the sense not to establish permanent settlements in such areas and moved the hell out of nature's way.

There are stories in our history where the local indigenous population approached the early settlers and told them not to build there , they didn't listen and got washed away , ( again and again ) . We have large meandering rivers that snake through their flood plane ( flood plane ) . When they flood they straight line it through the flood plane .
Check Google Map and you can see what i'm talkin about

I have just heard on channel 10 news, 75% of the state of Queensland has been declared a national disaster zone. To put that into context, that is an area about twice the size of Texas.

The area inundated is as big as France & Germany combined. All caused by a very strong La Nina in the western Pacific Ocean

I'm in Brisbane, and thankfully no one i know is hurt or missing, or had any significant damage to property.

I'm living with my parents, and our house is in a floodable area according to the flood maps released. We aren't concerned yet, as peak tide is around and hour and a half away, and the creek nearby isn't that bad, as it would need to rise about 2.5 metres to ge to our doorstep basically. Friend of mine is on a street that is half flooded, but he is in the lucky half. Some friends and family are experiencing power outages, and the city has basically shut down for like 3 days now, hardly anyone is going to work.

It's going to cause some major damage to the Australian Economy too. This is the third largest city in the country, and is the financial hub for the state. Also, a LOT of our food production is from areas now basically underwater, and many crops have been ruined. Our dollar was trading ABOVE the U.S. dollar for a little while, but i doubt thos days will be seen again for a long time now.

The Pakistani flood was much worse and it was on the news many times.

I guess there are not many Pakistanis JUBBERS here, otherwise there would be as many threads about that flood too. The thread about the UN to intervene was a joke from Lostlover.

water receding in Brisbane and Ipswich , one more body found in a car in Ipswich , not much to add

14 now confirmed dead, 70 confirmed missing with grave fears held for at least 12 of these.
