I was watching episode of "Queer As Folk" last night on Logo. It absolutely got on my nerves and I wondered why I ever watched it when it was shown on Showtime...All the characters, bad dialogue and Randy Harrison made for a viewing nightmare....I can't figure it out, but my flavor for the show has certainly changed...anyone, thoughts on the post QAF era....???:confused: #-o
 
LOL, I know what you mean. I guess it was a novelty of sorts when it started. But, it's difficult to look at re-runs of the ones I watched (I tired of it in the second or third season). It's amazing, though, I can't find anyone who admires the show, or admits they like/liked it. I'm sure there are people out there--including here--who do, as ultimately, it's a matter of preferences more than anything else.

(P.S. I'm moving this to the Entertainment forum, where TV shows are discussed, vs. the Bisexual forum which is in the naughty bits section.)

i watch it!

i know it's not a great show, definitely a guilty pleasure but i enjoy it, i guess more as an escape than anything, i don't experince much "gayness" on a day-to-day basis so it's a nice little escape for one hour a week
 
What else was there like it at the time? What else is there now? Lots sure, but nothing compared to what we should/could have.

Like has been said, novelty for it's time. Some things don't age well either especially in the gay subculture.
 
I loved it for the first few seasons. It was indeed a novelty at the beginning.

By the last season it just became so unbelievable... bombs, cancer, babies, gays joining straight-bashing groups, almost-murders, etc. Sheesh.
 
The English version was really good. The American version was complete crap!
 
i don't understand how it got so bad so fast....you're correct, aaron...then - the first two seasons were very entertaining!

Don't forget how groundbreaking it was for its time, before everyone just took it for granted. It was a narrow slice of gay life that broadened itself into something more.

I liked both the English and the American versions. The English one had the advantage of only running for two seasons so it left you wanting more. The US version did get stranger and stranger in the later seasons, but it was fine if you didn't look for it to be more than the soap it had become.

Plus there were some memorable stuff even in the later episodes.
 
I've only seen up to a part of season 2 (US) and I like it a lot. It's definitely not my favourite show in the world, but it does keep me coming back for more.

The two good things of the English version were the originiality and Charlie Hunnam. The rest were crap. I vote for the America version anytime.
 
Entertainment doesn't always have to be realistic. At the end of the day, QAF was a homosexual soap opera. And just like regular soap operas, not everything is realistic. It's all about entertainment value. Nobody at QAF ever claimed that this was an accurate representation about the life of every gay man.

As a soap opera form of entertainment, QAF was decent. Socially, not quite as much. But one can't deny its impact on society at the time of its debut. It wasn't perfect (I hated the whole 'dirty club boy' feel) but it did have redeeming qualities. Far from perfect, but far from horrible, too.
 
QAF was an hour full of cliches, but hey...growing up in a small town, all I had was QAF and Will & Grace, so I can't speak negatively. Not top-knotch entertainment, but it served its purpose. lol
 
you know what.....even though you may not agree with QAF or think of it as a joke, the truth is that this show serves as an outlet for teens or older gay ppl who don't have the luxury of comming out and comming to terms with their sexuality, i know it was an outlet for me! i am completely obsessed with the show! i swear ive rented all seasons at my local video store at least 5 times! i decided it was smarter to just buy them.....but i seriously think it's a great show! it allwoed me to live my gay life vicariously through the charecters.....it also emphisizes safe sex which is another plus.....it's a shame that they didn't continue the show.
 
I like it after a while but when they stopped showing them on Showtime, I didn't like it being shown on Logo with all the censored crap. I didn't want to buy the DVD's either.
 
I enjoyed it and have all 5 seasons of the American version. Have not seen the English one. Where can I get it on DVD?
 
I'm not the biggest fan. It was sort of the gay equivalent of a minstrel show. Not very helpful for the large number of people who maybe caught the program but were unfamiliar with gay people in day-to-day life.
 
First of all, for the love of God if you haven't seen QAF already don't watch it for the first time on Logo. (And, while I'm at it, don't watch 'Six Feet Under' on Bravo or 'The Sopranos' on A&E, either)

Do yourself a favor and go out and rent the discs if you can.

Seeing those cable shows on 'basic' is just awful. The cursing, the drug use and yes, the sex are all crucial parts to these shows. Not to mention interrupting 'the flow' with endless commercials really kills the momentum.

I too own all the American QAF dvd's. I like, love and occasionally can't stand the series at the same time. Some great story lines mixed in with some silly sub-plots ('jerk at work', anyone ?) always frustrated me about the show.

Still, it's very much worth watching, and at times I actually cried and laughed out loud watching it, and that's my definition of fairly good entertainment.
