Considering how many (closeted) gay men portray straight characters...

But really, one of the reasons that there have been few gay characters on TV is because people don't want to play gay for fear of being thought gay themselves. But the key thing with TV is that it's not real... these characters are not the people who portray them.

As for your list, I believe it's correct.

It never bothered me the real orientation of the actors in the show... what always bothered me about the show was that there wasn't a "healthy" relationship amongst the entire group.

It portrayed everyone's relationship as being dysfunctional as if EVERY gay relationship has some major issue to work through.

Should gay characters in film and TV predominately be portrayed by gay actors?

Just look at how many straight characters have been portrayed by gay actors since the beginning of film and television.

If you're surprised by their sexuality, then that is testament to the acting abilities of Gale and Scott and Hal and Chris.

The only thing that bugs me is that the actor who plays brian has like a vendetta against gay people. He constantly, in almost every interview, makes sure that everyone knows that he is 100% straight.

I don't need to see him saying that all the time, just once was enough for me to believe that he's straight.

Yeah, that's about right. However, it did bother me at the lack of ethnic diversity of the series as if others doesn't exist...

I watched this show when it was on Showtime. I had a crush on Peter Paige (Emmett Honeycutt).

To answer your question, no this should not bother you. Actors are portraying characters, acting. The characters does not have to reflect what is actually going on the their private lives.

I accept it as a necessity. There just aren't enough gay actors out there of the calibre of the guys on that show. And the idea there are a lot of well-known actors who are in the closet is a gay urban myth.

But for some strange reason it bothers me when straight actors like Hal Sparks or Erick McCormack play such likeable gay characters. Especially when the show is on for a long time, I really start to care about them. Not in a sex way, I just think of them as my friends.

Then after the show is off the air, if I see them playing a straight character in something else, I feel betrayed somehow. It's like, this guy is never going to play a gay character again as long as he lives. It's almost a homophobia feeling, which I know isn't fair, but I can't help it.

Anybody else feel that way?

Yeah, that's about right. However, it did bother me at the lack of ethnic diversity of the series as if others doesn't exist...

I love QAF, one of my favorite shows of all time, but I have to admit that the lack of ethnic diversity did bother me as well. I think you maybe saw a few black men or latino men here and there (mainly Brian hooking up) but that was about it.

Also, someone mentioned the location of QAF- actually it took place in Pittsburgh, which from my understanding, is far less diverse in terms of ethnicity than Philadelphia. While the show took place in Pittsburgh it was actually filmed in Toronto and Los Angeles.

As for the characters - doesn't matter whether straight or gay, just good acting overall. I've always felt like I am a mix of all the characters but would probably most identify with Mike and Ted. I'm probably least like Brian since he is so outspoken but did like his sense of fashion :) . My all time favorite though is Dr. Cameron :luv: - he is my dream man!!!! Smart, good looking, sexy, successful, romantic, good sense of humor yet serious, what more could you ask for? :)

fallen, it has been my experience that ALL relationships have problems regardless of sexuality, ethnicity or any of those other words that end in 'y'. you don't have relationships unless you're bumping more than pelvic regions together, after all thats what puts the relation part in the ship #-o:=D:#-o just my opinion of course.:cool:

The only reason THAT bothered me, was because of the location the show was supposedly in - Philly.

And isn't Hal Sparks admittedly bisexual? I can't find the link, but i thought i read that before.

Just to clarify, the show was supposedly in Pittsburgh and was filmed in Toronto.

I was fan of QF from day one. Thanks to Showtime for having the courage to present the show. Loved Justin as he cums to cum out of the closet.

I've always had a love/hate relationship with that show...

It could have some really well-done, even tear-inducing scenes one minute, then something completely ridiculous the next. (Ted's "jerk at work", anyone ?)

Still, Hal Spark's "Micheal" was the character I most identified with as well. He was SO convincing in some of those sex scenes that it remains to this day hard for me to believe that he's "100 percent" straight.

I must say I quite enjoyed the show, and still am, and personally I think Randy Harrison is one hot stud. and thats really freaky cause most of the time I don't even think about someone well his age, he was born in 77 which means that he is 13 years older than me, making him about 32/33 something like that, way past my choice list of 18-25 but I would def get on my knees for him. :fellate::fellate:

Hal sparks is str8? reallly? not even a little bit curious? I wrote this whole vid for him and Greg Kinnear ...........oh wellll

I wasn't really suprised to learn that many of the actors were straight. As for the straight ones going on and on about being straight don't think feel it was homophobic but rather out of fear of type casting and them stroking themselves at how good an actor they are. QAF had a huge straight female fan base as well and they were playing into that too.

The show sort of lost when it took a turn for the assanine. Justin got gay bashed had some post traumatic shakes and couldn't draw for several episodes. Brain romantically nails him in the ass and he's instantly cured. Remember hearing Howard Stern going on about how QAF taught him that "the butt sex cures all problems" because of that episode. I'd still watch it occasionally but stopped going out of my way after that. That's when it jumped that shark for me.
