It was just announced that Queer As Folk Uk is finally out on dvd. Does anyone know if the Uk edition is superior to the our version?

I haven't seen the UK version (it's been sitting on my DVD for a while) but the UK version is significantly shorter - I think, six episodes in the first season and two in the second.

I've heard extremely good things about it, and it does appear (from the bits I've seen) to be slightly edgier than the US version.

Do let us know what you think when you've seen it.

I tried to watch it recently, but it felt quite dated. altho, the English version of Nathan is super cute.

^Not in this series. To me that was the main difference between the two shows.

In the UK version they talked about what they did in detail. But, they didn't show very much.
In the US version they just showed it to us. They played it up for shock value.

I saw the U.K. version when it first aired over a decade ago. I've seen nothing of the U.S. version.

Slightly obvious question:

If the U.S. version was even more explicit than the U.K. version, then how on earth did it get past the American censors? I would have expected there to have been a HUGE controversy, protests for it to be forced off the air and banned, and a campaign to launch a legal suit against the channel that aired it.

Am I wrong?

^It aired on a paid premium channel Showtime. They aren't subject the censors the way other channels are.

Also, Showtime wanted the controversy. They've always played 2nd fiddle to HBO and needed something to get attention.

And the folks who normally are all over any kind of gay content, never really said anything about the show.

This is only speculation on my part. But, I figure they felt the show made gay men look bad. Slutty, drug users, sleep anything that moves. To them I feel it presented gay men just the way they wanted the world to see us.

The main controversy on this show was within the gay community and how it affected our image. Lots of gay people here said it was harmful to our image.

I honestly don't think you can compare the two. The UK version is equivalent to a mini series, where the US version is was over 80 episodes. Besides the name and the obvious jumping off point they really don't have anything in common.

I just finished watching the UK version and enjoyed it very much. I don't know why they didn't continue the series like showtime did!? Here are a few of my thoughts
I enjoyed the characters of Vince and Hazel more than Hal Sparks and his mom in the UK version. Nathan was insanely cute. I like the character of Brian better than Stuart and wish it was longer!
Other than that it was very similar.

The first few episodes of the US version were similar, and that's where the similarities end. Ted didn't die, Emmett's character was more developed and so on...
