Should I do sit-ups every day for abs?
What is a good method to get pecs? I can't stand doing push-up, so something other than that.

Thanks.

Hi dude.

I posted a thread here a while ago about being too skinny and how to get more in shape. It's been almost a year and I look amazing. I was like 130-135 pounds (6'1) and now I'm 145 or so. I was specifically focusing on getting really nice abs and pecs too.

Here has been my routine for about the past year:

200 or so push ups
and 50 or so sit ups

every other day

+ a protein drink after + eating a good meal after. I was also doing free weights for a while, but stopped because I lost my gym membership. Anyways, the best way to get abs is to do sit ups. The BEST and I think ONLY way to get pecs is to do push ups. It's amazing how much my pectoral muscles have changed since I started to do push ups. Yes, they are really uncomfortable and hard to do, and I hate them, but they work. Start off only doing a small amount, and then work your way up week after week.

It also depends on what kind of shape you are in currently, that'll determine how easy it will be to carve out muscle.

I can't do 200 push-ups. My nose bleeds if I do 40 of them at a time.

Oh, I just noticed I totally reversed that. I meant to say 200 sit ups, 50 push ups, every other day. That's what I do.

I can do the sit ups 100 at a time, and the push ups about 10-20 at a time, depending on how I'm feeling.

Try doing ten, then doing another ten a few minutes later, and work your way up.

Why does your nose bleed if you do 40 of them? That sounds really odd.

I don't know. It just happens. I get too tired and my nose bleeds. It doesn't happen often, just when I do a lot without a break.

Should I do it like this?

In the afternoon: 100 sit-ups and 25 push-ups.

A few hours before I go to sleep: 100 sit-ups and 25 push-ups.

No. Do them in sets.

It's more like, pick a time of day, whenever: do 100 sit ups. Take a few minutes break, drink some water. Do another 100. Take another break, drink more water. Then, for the sit ups, do 10-20 at a time depending on how difficult it is for you, and then take a break (just like with the sit ups) and do the other 10-20. Then drink some protein mix or eat (if you're trying to gain weight/muscle mass too).

Play some energetic music while you do it. After a while it really does start to give you a high. I always feel better after a work out routine.

I think maybe you should ask a doctor about the nose bleed thing. That sounds a little abnormal.

whats your body type. are you the long lean skinny type who has an impossible time putting on muscle, or are you naturally thicker and easily build muscle.

but definitely pushups arent the only way to gain pecs, any chest muscle exercise. as for abs, you can do as many situps as you want, but they won't show unless you have the right body fat percentage, and that's not in everoyne's genetics

I am skinny.

I did the 200 sit-ups and 50 push-ups. After that, I ate my dinner which was pork, mashed potatoes, beans, and carrots.

I also jog for at least 20-30 minutes a day.

What would u suggest for someone who puts on muscle very easily but also puts on fat easily. Note: I'm running twice a week and monitoring portions appropriately (not starving myself)

What other things can you do for pecs besides push ups, without using a machine at a gym?

Bored - that sounds like a good start, but I have to admit I'm far from an expert, just talking form personal experience. I am REALLY skinny too. Like heroin chic skinny (well not anymore). To gain weight, I have two suggestions: switch to other kinds of meat instead of white meats (for example, beef, instead of chicken and things like that). Even though both are good for protein, if you're skinny, it means you burn calories really easily, so you have to get more calories (eat however much you want). I'd stop jogging - it'll make you lose weight... I say this, but I probably walk at least a mile a day (AT LEAST... city boy). It's those kinds of things (eating more meat, eating more in general, eating more calories) + working out that has made me gain a good amount of weight + put on muscle. If I just ate white, lean meats like you mentioned, I don't think it'd have the same affect.

In other words, the trick is to put on weight, but make the weight turn into muscle mass. :)

Ab work can be done every day.

Pushups are basic exercises for developing strength in the shoulder-upper arm and chest. It's probably a good place to start for someone who doesn't work out with weights.

If you want to add mass, you're going to have to do resistance work- preferably with weights. And unless you're been working out for a while in a good well-rounded weight routine, it's premature to focus on specific muscles. There's a lot of guys who do that because they think it will make them look better but they end up with an odd out-of-proportion look- all pecs and no arms or legs. One reason that it's so easy to tell gay men from straight men at a gym is that the gay guys often have better symmetry and don't spend their entire workout at the bench press station. :)

You'd have to provide more information about your diet and the distance that you're running but generally when people say they put on muscle easily, it's probably not muscle that they're adding- it's fat stores.

A balanced diet, regular workouts and time are the three things that are needed to develop new muscle. Muscle development takes time- months of working out to add new muscle. Rapid gains in muscle are actually just improvement in the tone of the muscle and increased stores of carbohydrate and fat in between the muscle fibers. That fat and carbohydrate store goes away quickly when you stop working out.

I said every other day. I also agree with Kara that it's important to just start off with push up and sit ups before doing weights.

free weights .

I agree if you're a skinny boy you need to be eating higher calorie stuff, not just chicken breast.

I put on 30 pounds of muscle from eating lots of steaks and hamburgers

Oh yeah, I forgot free weights can help pecs if you're lifting them out to the side.

I'm with youngnihilist in terms of gaining weight. It sounds like a gross diet, but I've been 130 pounds for years, until I started eating more of that kind of meat.

I did my 200 sit-ups and 50 push-ups today.

I ate multigrain cheerios for breakfast, I ate a hot pocket right after my workout, and 2 bowels of homemade chicken soup. I have jogged for about 12 minutes today, and I will jog for at least 30 more by the end of today. I also drank half a gallon of water.

Did I do good, or do I need to eat less?

I did them today.

*Wants to eat the hershey chocolate bar i have downstairs*

sit ups are ok, but not going to give you solid abs.... got with core exercises in general. Planks, Crunches, Hanging Abs, leg lifts, etc... if sit ups alone did it... we would all have great abs.

what are some good freeweight exercises for pecs?

they're the one part of my body that doesn't feel like it's aching enough after I workout.
