I'm thinking of starting prep and already did the necessary STD and kidney tests. Was there a liver test I should have done?

I read a study that up to 50% of PREP users will eventually get an STD. I get that this is because of not using condoms, but that number seems super high. Is this what you guys are experiencing? Am I basically for sure going to get ghonnorea, shyphillis, warts in my ass, etc??

I'm most afraid of getting viral-related bumps on my penis or ass, which don't have a simple treatment.

Thanks!

probably better in health and wellness section....

I worked for AHF for many years - and I can tell you that PREP is NOT an excuse for not using condoms if you don't want other non-HIV STDS - the STD rates have exploded all over the country - if you don't use condoms it is roulette at best....

It is true that since guys have been going condomless, the rates of syphilis, gonorrhea, HPV (warts, anal cancers) and hepatitis have increased in men who have sex with men (MSM). The rates have increased dramatically in urban areas.

If you are worried about getting STDs, you should continue using condoms with PrEP as long as you are having sex with multiple partners.

But those are treatable, no? There´s information on a Dutch website I´ve visited that there´s even treatment for hepatitis C now.

Increasingly, no.

The strains of HPV that cause warts are different strains from the ones that cause oral, throat and anal cancer. The HPV vaccine for younger men will help prevent some incidences of cancers but for guys who have already been exposed to HPV, we're not sure vaccination will be effective.

HSV outbreaks can be treated with anti-virals but about 50% people with HSV are still contagious even though they are taking anti-virals.

About 30% of gonorrhea is now resistant to the first-line antibiotics that we used to prescribe. The same is true of other bacteria like shigella that are issues in MSM.

Back in the 1970s and 1980s we were able to dismiss some STDs as not being as big of a deal because it could be taken care of with a single shot of antibiotics. That's changed. The increasing drug resistance is something that we need to be concerned about.
