Question to you guys about cell phone number ownership

just get one of those ultracheap voip home phones and have them assign your old number to it before you cancel.

some companies let you go on extended absence and they turn it off but don't disconnect it, for a much lower rate.

Prepaid services are monthly in the US. I have no idea about Australia.

And as far as having thousands of contacts in your phone, that's something changing your phone number can try to prevent from happening. Nobody talks to thousands, or even a hundreds of people often enough to have all of those phone numbers in their contact list. Clean your damn phone, Telstra.

The smart phone is a computer.
If you want to text John Smith, you just search/type John smith for christ sake.
So you keep everything.

Save money.
Which you can do better by trashing your old number completely. Seriously, how do you make an attachment to a phone number? It's so Asian.

Maybe you do, most don't. What's the point? How do you even know whose on the other end of all those numbers after awhile? It's bizzare having random strangers numbers in your phone.

A few months ago, I started working for a new company. ...

Maybe in a years time would be a better time to think about letting go of the personal phone. Will the new job be....for ever? Sounds like swinging a phone bill for another years time would be no probs for you right now....

If you really want it, go PrePay, just like others said here.

Honestly, it felt weird when I had to change my number after 10-12 years, everyone knew it etc; then, I changed it and guess what? No one cared. It´s easier than it looks.

Oh, so I pay $30 and it's good for like a year before I have to pay again? I'll go via this route, then.

In England if you do not use the phone in 90 days the number is gone and the money you have on the phone is too so check in your area!

OMG! Why didn't I think of this? Someone just suggested to me to port my number into google voice. That way, the number will remain mine and it's 100% free!

So, today I took the plunge and canceled my service. I also did not port my number over to google voice. Those of you who said to let it go. You were right. No point in keeping it.
