Granny had a wringer washer when I were a wee tyke. Cousin Sue got her hair caught in it one time. You should have heard the skareeems....

I only remember candy cigarettes and movie reels from school. I'm 26. Am I supposed to remember more?

Hmmm...I knew 6. Does 21 really count as "getting older", or have I just been lucky to go to lots of places that still have these things around? All 6 are things I have seen in person.

2. Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water
3. Candy cigarettes
13. Howdy Doody
14. 45 RPM records
18. Mimeograph paper
23. Drive-ins

Remember when cashiers had to key everything in on the old-fashioned cash registers?

I was in a slow line at the grocery store tonight and got into a conversation with a lady in line ahead of me. She said, "Imagine how much slower it would be if the checker had to key everything in!"

I remember the first time I saw a laser scanner at the checkout. I was amazed at how fast it was, and it hasn't been all that many years ago!

What were skate keys used for? Servicing and repair of the wheels?

What were skate keys used for? Servicing and repair of the wheels?

The old-fashioned metal skates clamped onto your shoes. They key was used to tighten the skates to your shoes. By turning the key, you could widen or tighten the clamp.

Older Than Dirt Quiz: Count all the ones that you
remember not the ones you were told about! Ratings at
the bottom.

2. Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water

I think that those were still around when I was kid in the 1970s.
3. Candy cigarettes

same answer as above - I really do remember those but barely.
9. P.F. Flyers
I have no idea what this is. ???
14. 45 RPM records

yep. I loved 45s.
15. S&H Green Stamps
Is that the same thing as the blue stamps your mom got at the gas station, and then you'd lick them and paste them into a book, and then you could mail in the books and get toys? I remember I really wanted the toy toolbox set (don't ask me why - I mean I'm inept with tools, and was a girly girl) and finally got enough blue stamps to get it.
21. Roller skate keys

I don't even know what those are. Anyone ???

23. Drive-ins
I went to the drive in as a kid. Don't people still do that? Here in Washington there are several thriving drive ins which seems weird consider how much it rains here.

I see that the roller skate keys have been explained! I didn't get it at all. LOL.

I remember when the cashiers had to key everything in. It was that long ago. Didn't that change in the 80s? And remember when there was no such thing as an atm!! God, I remember my parents had to go to the bank physically to get money!

As for keying everything in - The grocery store chain Trader Joe's had some reason why they were resistent to changing to scanning and kept the keying in system much longer than anyone else!! In 2001 when I was in school in San Fran I remember that the trader joe's still had cashiers keying every item in. By the time I graduated lawschool in 2004 they had finally changed to scanners. I can't remember the reasoning as to why the company thought that scanners wouldn't be a good thing.

Does anyone remember "The Mighty Hercules?"

The Mighty Hercules
(sung by Johnny Nash)

Hercules, hero of song and story.
Hercules, winner of ancient glory.
Fighting for the right,
Fighting with his might,
With the strength of ten, ordinary men.

Hercules, people are safe when near him.
Hercules, only the evil fear him.
Softness in his eyes,
Iron in his thighs,
Virtue in his heart,
Fire in every part,
Of the Mighty Hercules.

I feel pretty good about getting 9 (and three of them were only because my great grandmother had them in her basement), since I thought I was a lot older than that.

That being said, yes Ned Nickerson. I remember The Mighty Hercules.

Yes, I remember all 25 from Ned's first post and alot of them from other posts but luckily am not old as dirt as dirt has been around for centuries ha ha........anyways was a fun thread to recall things from childhood.........I still have some 98 records along with 45's and 33 and a thirds........I recently let loose of my 8 track player I bought in 1966 when the new T-Bird I bought that year had one in it..........was amongst those who stared at a test pattern when tv first came out and airings didn't come on til noon at least in my rural area of North Dakota.........then too we didnt get electricity on the farm til REA came through in 1948............so Christmas tree had real candles on it for lighting and we only lit them for short periods of time..........well, thanks again for the thread Ned........
