Quotable quotes

^ You mean I was translating? I was NOT: I was spansplaining

^"Because where there are no terms, a word appears at the right time." - Goethe

You made me go to my Google translate twice on this one, since I had forgotten what it gave me the first time. I'm posting it here, so I won't have to translate it a third time!

^ "You" who?

^ "Denn eben wo Begriffe fehlen, da stellt ein Wort zur rechten Zeit sich ein." - Goethe

A "Begriff" is a term or a concept. It derives from the verb "begreifen", which means "understanding emotionally", "grasp"

So "precisely where our understanding in concepts fails, a word will appear at exactly the right time." is probably a better translation. What is going on in this sentence in the tension between the similarty of the meaning of "Begriff" and "Wort" and their paradoxical difference.

So you´ll find words to describe your situation exactly where emotional comprehension fails you.

^ What is going on in that sentence is the danger of actually making anyone believe that "words" could be a substitute for "concepts", as if there could be "words" without "concepts".

The same as saying "it's just semantics", as if "semantics" were some sort of frosting over "language" and "communication", and not their very dough.

I would have to read more of the essay to be sure.
