“Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault. Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope. They are the elect to whom beautiful things mean only Beauty. There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all.”
Oscar Wilde
Franco [Zeffirelli] is magical, quick of mind and feet, crafted by a mother who named him for zephyrs and spirits, and by Luchino Visconti, who became my great guide and teacher, and who educated Franco in all things artistic and amatory. You can say I am terribly jealous of Franco. …He is very grand and contradictory: He hates the word ‘gay,’ feeling it demeans the grandeur of homosexuals, who civilize the world, then he’ll describe the most beautiful cocks in the world, and then he’ll bemoan that he can’t be with a woman, and then claim abortion should be punishable by beheading. He’s a bit much. I love him though. He and Luchino introduced me in every sense of the word to Italy, and God that saved me. He is big of spirit; dramatic; histrionic. And he has saved my life.”—Tennessee Williams on Franco Zeffirelli.

Zeffirelli came to mind because it was the 100th anniversary of his birth a few days ago, and I read that the Italian airforce flew planes in formation over Florence to commemorate it.The Zeffirelli foundation has a museum devoted to his work in a palazzo on Piazza Sta Firenze in Florence, which I've walked by, but never entered. I went to the website yesterday: models and renderings of stage sets, costumes, videos, etc. It looked quite interesting. I attended a revival of his production of Aîda at La Scala four or so years ago. It truly was a hot mess.
Too bad Tennessee never lived to see Zeffirelli become a Berlusconi supporter.
Franco Zeffirelli did some truly terrific work. (Some not so great, yes, but much that was marvelous.)
But the best I can say of him as a human being is that he was a hot mess.
