Quotable quotes

Well, yeah -- he lives in L.A.

He certainly has a fair point, but if he lived in, say, Princeton or Cambridge -- or, especially, Northampton or Woodstock or New Paltz or Oberlin or Asheville or Charlottesville or Juneau or some other lefty smallish town -- he would hear people on the street talk more about morality, sustainability or philosophy than about the Kardashians.

In all my years in New York City, I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about that fame whore family while I was walking down the street.

I think he was being a little sarcastic. You might hear someone sitting in a coffee shop having a conversation about morality but I doubt anyone walking down the street is talking about anything other than their own self-obsessed lives while paying little attention to their own conversation mate.

In L.A., yeah. In NYC, you hear people talking about all kinds of things (and in all kinds of languages, especially in Queens). And often -- not always, but often -- it's just fine to join right in with a conversation. That's one of my favorite things about living here.

Some birds are not meant to be caged, that's all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs too sweet and wild. So you let them go, or when you open the cage to feed them they somehow fly out past you. And the part of you that knows it was wrong to imprison them in the first place rejoices, but still, the place where you live is that much more drab and empty for their departure.

Stephen King

It’s not the pain I’m afraid of; I know about the pain. What I’m afraid of is the end of this small, sweet dream.

Stephen King

That’s one thing Earthlings might learn to do, if they tried hard enough: Ignore the awful times, and concentrate on the good ones. – Tralfamadorians

We the unwilling,
Led by the unqualified,
Have been doing so much
For so long with so little,
That we now attempt the impossible
With absolutely nothing.
