Rock ‘N’ Roll Legend Chuck Berry Dead At 90

Rock ’n’ roll pioneer Chuck Berry has died, police said Saturday. He was 90.

Berry penned a great number of hits in the ‘50s and ‘60s like “Sweet Little Sixteen,” “Roll Over Beethoven” and “Rock and Roll Music” that influenced generations of rock groups, including The Beatles. Merging a captivating stage presence with his own blend of blues, country and jazz, Berry helped define the fledgling rock ‘n’ roll genre, later becoming one of the first musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

Born into a middle-class family in St. Louis, Missouri, Berry picked up the basics of guitar from a neighbor and started performing music as a teenager. In 1952, he formed a trio with Johnnie Johnson on piano and Ebby Harding on drums that rose to fame in the local nightclub scene. To pay the bills, Berry worked as a hairdresser. But soon enough he wouldn’t have time for that ― a trip to Chicago netted a recording session with Chess Records, during which Berry performed an old hillbilly tune called “Ida Red.” Changing the name to “Maybellene,” Chess sent the track to an influential New York DJ, and it became a hit among the teenage set.

.. blues..

Can someone explain the importance of this late singer to someone like me who has no idea who he is (or was)?

Did he personally influence the 1960s 'Mersey Beat'?

--- Like, Chuck Berry was different from Chubby Checker.

Here's one of his great songs you may be familiar with. "Johnny B. Goode". He was an influence on many of the rock legends who followed. :band:

I keep getting him mixed up with Little Richard.

He had some great songs.

90 is a good age.

RIP Mr. Rock n Roll.

Ever heard of google or wikipedia? Both can be remarkably helpful towards the education of the wilfully ignorant.

The KING of rock and roll has died.

Yes, Elvis Presley is usually called "The King" (of rock and roll)...I've always disagreed. Elvis was pretty groundbreaking on his first recordings (the "Sun stuff"), and he was always extremely good at what he did, he had plenty of chart-topping (#1) songs to prove his excellence, and he was the first "white" guy to really bring rock and roll into the scene nationally. He was preceded by black artists such as Little Richard, The Five Keys, and yes Chuck Berry. Elvis WAS doing rock and roll during this same pre-1956 period, but until 1956 his success was mostly regional (in the South). Not until "Hound Dog" in the middle of 1956, did Elvis begin to be known for what some people called "raucous" rock and roll; the other mentioned people were well established by the end of 1955.

Chuck Berry's influence still exists in some modern music, but there's not much of a consistent or identifiable genre that is considered an "Elvis Presley sound" - as such, yes, I've always considered Chuck Berry to indeed be The King, and some of my earliest all time favorite rock and roll songs were done by him.

Surprised to see this thread. If I'd ever given the matter any thought, which I can't say I have, I think I'd have said that he died years ago.

Chuck Berry Requiescat in Pace

Another real music legend gone at the fine age of 90.

Definitely one of the founders of rock and roll and a major influence on musicians who followed him.

And yes, I asked for the title to be corrected...I have made all kinds of keystroke errors this morning...too tired.

Re: Chuck Berry Resquiat in Pace
