I am watching the Today show right now and they just did a segment on how DVD's are a thing of the past already. They say cheaper movie downloads are taking over the scene now. Bittorrent is saying downloading movies cheaper online and have them on your computer is going to take over DVD's altogether. Wal-Mart (the biggest seller of DVD's in the nation-according to sales) has a new deal with the new Superman Returns DVD that if you buy it you can downloud the entire movie to your computer for only a few bucks.

I dont like it. I would rather buy a movie, support the actors and the studio. If you download a movie you have to watch it on your computer or ipod and well thats just stupid. I rather watch a movie laying in my comfy bed or on my couch on my big screen tv. Yea you can say you can just burn it onto a dvd-r but its just not the same. Plus alot of people dont have DVD burners.

Will you continue to buy DVD's or just download it?
 
I don't see downloading taking over DVD's. It takes up SO much space! And ... watching it on the "Big Screen" HDTV is so much better!! ..|

However ... I wouldn't be surprised if Memory Sticks, or something similar, might replace the discs. :cool:
 
I have downloaded films, but I hate watching them on my computer. I only download stuff that's very hard to get, and even then it's frustrating because Í'm watching something I really HAD to see in the sub-par environment of my computer OR I have to burn it to a DVD.

I would never bother downloading something I can get at the local video store, and I should hope the video stores never close..
 
Oh yeah, nothing better than the joy of downloading a HD/BluRay movie on 56k. 8)
 
It's dumb to stop making DVD movies. Since about 89% of the population have a DVD player in their house hold, when probably 40% have BluRay and HD DVD players.
 
Well, when DVD first came out people said the same thing. "Why change when the majority of the population have video cassette players." Times change. The next big thing will either be High-Definition DVD (HD-DVD/Blu-Ray) or downloading. Personally, I think downloading will come out on top. But who knows...

Apple's iTV will probably have some sort of impact on this too. Comes out early next year.
 
Meh I would hate the idea of that. Assuming everyone has
1) fast enough internet connections
2) huge enough hard drives
3) dvd burners

I mean, its a lot easier with music (which i still dont dig too much but whatever), but movies? nah.
 
You can now download movies on Xbox Live. It's pretty cool. You can download them in normal definition or HD, and since the Xbox 360 is already hooked up to your TV there's none of that worrying about having to watch it on your PC.

I'm sure there will be more devices with this kind of capability popping up (like someone mentioned the Apple iTV thing), and broadband speeds keep increasing so the download size will gradually become less and less of an issue.
 
the thing is you wont need a big hard drive
because it will be like either a video store where you hire the movie to watch for a couple of dollars or you can buy it

if you buy it since my internet connection is quite fast you could either download it OR stream directly from the internet
since you dont watch movies all the time you wouldent have all of them on your hard drive but download it whenever you want it

they will be cheap enough soon they can be as little as A$500 now its cheaper than hddvd and bluray

Meh, might as well jsut buy the DVD. Just seems easier for me.

that's what i was thinking, except in a LOT lest costly terms.

look people: mozy on over to the electronics store, get yourself a $40 remote control; hook your pc up to your computer and enjoy your moves on whatever screen you got in the living room.

no fuss, no muss, ultra cheap (atleast as far as electronics equipment goes)

your thinking of it the wrong terms in a few years almost everyone will have something in there living room capable of streaming from the net or from your computer

it will be in your living room
not on the computer

i repeat you will be watching these movies on your tv not on the computer

Unless they can come up with a way to make the movies take up less space on your computer AND make them easily and affordabley watchable on your TV, I don't think downloading will ever replace physical media for movies. Who wants to watch a movie on their computer? Who wants to watch them on a 2-inch iPod screen? That's just dumb. I want them on my TV with my surround sound.

It still hasn't happened for music. Downloading (legally or otherwise) is on the rise, but there will always be some form of physical media for it. A lot of people like having something tangible. I do. Plus, CDs are still, by far, the number 1 physical media for music and have been for 20+ years. So, I don't see DVDs going anywhere any time too soon.

I think the DVD may be replaced by another smaller phsyical media format someday, but downloading won't be the victor.
 
Movies of good quality eat way to much hard drive space. dvds give good quality extras, campact, and take no hard drive space. DVDS are better because you can take them to a friends and watch them on their big screen with a bunch of friends.
 
YOU DONT NEED TO STORE THEM ON YOUR HARD DRIVE

they will be on servers and you will download what you want when you want

since internet connections will be very fast you will be able to watch it while ur downloading

SHIT i can do that NOW
