Estelle Getty has passed away.

The legendary actress died today in her Los Angeles home at 5:35 A.M.

She was 84.

May she lighten up heaven with joy as she has our lives

Already a thread on this but this IS the right section for it.

It's weird. She played a character who lived to be older than she lived. It's like she "experienced" it already.

I knew she wasn't "well" and thinking of Sophia the other day (in regard to a line after Rose said a dog she was taking care of could find anything, and Sophia says, "Anything? [to the dog] A viable democrat for president! Go!"), she was on my mind.

I hope she went peacefully. A brilliant comedic actress.

felt very sad when i heard this. they still broadcast old episodes of golden girls on saturday nights here in sa. its one of those shows that is timeless, and is still relevant in our modern times.

unlike other shows from its day which were mostly conservative, it covered very controversial topics such as being gay, casual sex, artificial insemination etc. in one epsiode, blanche's gay brother wanted to marry his boyfriend, covering the same-sex marriage issue long before it became the hot debate it is today.

in my opinion, the show was far ahead of its time, and estelle getty was brilliant as sophia petrillo.

she is finally free from the terrible disease that she lived with for a large part of her final years.

RIP estelle (o) and thank you for being a friend :)

This makes me so sad. It brought tears to my eyes when I heard it of all places while driving my car and listening to a Boston sports radio show called the big show. They were actually speaking about this instead of sports. My favorite show bar none. I never saw the show when it was on in the 80's and early 90's. , but am now addicted and watch whenever i can. Lifetime has numerous showings daily that allow me to get my fix whenever possible. some of sophia's line were so classic. hopefully she is in a better place.:(:(:(:(:(:(

That is so sad to hear. I loved her sarcasm as Sophia. R.I.P. Estelle

i´m melancholic now...the golden girls guide me through my youth. its sad...
rip estelle!

I am so sad to hear this news, and I know my partner, who was a big fan, will be more upset.

The Golden Girls is one of those comedies that has stood the test of time and is still funny, good clean fun for all the family and deals with some great issues, in fact I believe it dealt with homosexuality better than most gay themed comedies

My thoughts and prayers go to her family. She was always a favorite of mine.

My friends said that if I was ever a Golden Girl, that it would be Sophia. She was awesome and so damn sarcastic! I will miss her. :(

That is sad news indeed.

Loved the Golden Girls & especially loved Estelle.

Rest in peace.

I used to watch the show with my grandma when I was really young. I loved Sophia.

RIP Miss Getty.

This is sad. We knew, that she was very ill...now she is free. Thanks for your entertainment, Estelle!

I had just got home from work and started watchin the girls when I heard the news. I cried as I watched the show.
Goodbye Sophia

Such a sad day. :cry::cry:

My thoughts and prayers go to her family.

Eternal rest grant unto you.
May perpetual light shine upon you.
May you rest in peace.

OMG I hadn't heard! I'm watchin the Golden Girls now! That's so sad! Wasn't she one of the younger girls on the show? I knew that they had a reunion show and she was unable to make it because she was sick, but I had no idea she was close to her death bed! We'll miss you!!
