MSNBC's Rachel Maddow is broadcasting from Afghanistan this week. Just finished watching it tonight and I have to say I learned more about the Afghan war on the past hour than I thought I ever would.

http://content.usatoday.com/communi...0/07/rachel-maddow-reports-from-afghanistan/1

She interviewed Brigadier General Ben Hodges who gave a very insightful view on the war. She went into Kandahar and spoke with the troops.

You have to admire her for going to Afghanistan and reporting in the war zone. Her show tonight was non-political. There was no Republican bashing; just reporting on what it's like to be a soldier and a civilian and how it's going. There's even a TGI Fridays!

Like her or not, you have to admit she's an intelligent woman ..... she's a Rhodes Scholar and earned a Doctorate in Philosophy in politics from Oxford University.

A quote from her: "I'm undoubtedly a liberal, which means that I'm in almost total agreement with the Eisenhower-era Republican party platform."

I would like to see other reporters and political commentators follow in her footsteps.

Thanks Rachel! I'll be watching all week.

I missed it. Whatcha learn? In example not totality

How the military are carefully trying to earn the trust of the Afghani people by example. Providing them security that the Taliban says they'll give them but doesn't. The General was mentioning how Karzai has to realize we're not going to be there forever and he will have to provide the security and stability after we leave. (altho this is common knowledge it's interesting to see the General explain it to Rachel while flying in a helicopter.) The ancient trade routes and the tolls the merchants pay.

Just to name a couple things. I just found it very interesting to see this without the usual finger pointing and the blame game.

Most of the places we have invaded, provided security or freed have become interwoven into fabric of american life vis a vis the interaction of soldiers with the people of those nations. Legally immigrating with service members, i might add, but that is another thread.

If they will ever become trusting and staunch American allies it will take generations. Those people have seen so many different people with different ideologies behind there assaults that they simply ride whatever wave of support and cash that is there at the time.

I do respect Rachel Maddow quite a bit. However, I would have a lot more respect for her if she would explain why we are really there, instead of trying to tell a "nice, warm American story" about how America is spreading freedom and democracy against the Taliban.

Let's talk about the proposed Trans-Afghan Pipeline and the 16 trillion worth of oil and gas reserves from the Caspian Basis that is proposed to flow through Afghanistan instead of the nonsense "We have to fight them there so we don't have to fight them here" crap and how the "Taliban could provide a safe-harbor for "Al Qaeda to set up operations in Afghanistan".

I want to see this debate about the war elevated over what it really is all about instead of constantly hearing these false reasons why we are supposedly there.

I listened through a batch of segments and didn't hear her talking about why we were there, at all -- just what they're trying to accomplish.

It seemed a bit flat to me, but still well done.

She's so patriotic, especially with her comment that our presence in Afghanistan is "inherently corrupting".

Laika, obviously it's going to be corrupting, but that doesn't the word needs to have a negative meaning.

:rotflmao: That is so true!

Yes, it is. And that's why I was a Republican: I grew up withe Eisenhower-style Republicans. Then I realized that the party has become theocratic-authoritarian.

Unfortunately, today's Democrats have gone the authoritarian path as well, and very intrusive into private lives.

I grew up in a Republican household. My parents were Republican and my Grandmother was a staunch Republican..... until Reagan. My Grandmother died a few years ago at the age of 102, and voted a straight Republican ticket since the 1930's. She was what she called a "traditional Republican" until Reagan came along. She saw through his phoniness and pandering to the right wing. She referred him as "Bonzo" (in reference to his film). My parents also..... when Reagan came along they became liberal Democrats and voted and campaigned for the Democratic party.

Is this what Ms Maddow is talking about? The Republicans morphed into something so ugly that in order to retain their political ideals they had to switch party affiliation? She's even more brilliant than I thought she was.

YOU GO RACHEL!..|

I'm not sure we watched the same show.First off ,Rachel doesn't and never has done bullshit ''rah rah '' democracy pieces. I didn't notice her saying we were very effective at spreading around anything but money in Afghanistan.Lots of money. And it's going into the wrong hands.Kinda like how contractors are paying the Taliban NOT to attack their supply convoys.Who pays the contractors? Your tax dollars do.So our tax dollars are being payed to the Taliban we are trying to get rid of.Makes sense to me.

Instead of a Fox type ''democracy rocks'' type story, she did point out things like how there really isn't a justice system to speak of in Afghanistan.Or a real government for that matter. That with only 81 judges and only of them 9 actually working to serve a city of around a million people, many times, people lacking a viable alternative ,seek out the taliban to settle disputes.Just like old times.

She also pointed out how the people we are supporting are corrupt to their very core. That the money we provide them is being used to build tacky mansions for goverment officials who don't even live in the country. These same officials refuse to pay taxes on the property. They are rented out to western visitors.Your tax dollars at work.

Another thing that struck me,was as she pointed out, there doesn't seem to be a ''plan b'' if our current strategy doesn't work out. There is no effective government in place there now.I wasn't given many reasons to be confident that one will somehow form in the next year, and even if it does, that it will able to remain viable after we leave. They have no economy. They aren't going to be able to provide for their people, and it wont be long till they go back to their old ways of religious fanatatism and violence..

I know I'm probably stating the obvious here, but this isn't going to end well. It's just a tremendous waste of life, money and expensive military resources.

She did great job in days in Afghanistan trying to give true and rational picture of the war we got from Bush. Keep up the good work Rachel.

I quite enjoy her show. She's well grounded in the data, acknowledges error, states her bias, has a sense of humor and offers time to contrary views in a ceaselessly polite manner.

And...
