Racism is not good, why is Nationalism ok ?

Maybe the Olympics and other sports should get rid of national anthems and flag waving ceremonies ?

I used to support Australian athletes/sports men/women no matter what but i think that is stupid.
Now i only support the best athletes, best sports men/women no matter what country.
 
I don't like Nationalism, I find it stupid... it should only be accepted from people who emigrated to another country, and took the nationality of said country because they liked it... everybody else only chance had you born in your nationality... you did nothing to "deserve/undeserve" it and therefor shouldn't be proud/ashamed of it

I don't think nationalism is okay. Like Nishin said, it's not your doing where you were born. It causes a lot of animosity between people when there's a lot of 'whoo hoo I'm an American' stuff. It's embarrassing. If you want to get along easily in some places, it's best to just say you're Canadian. Everyone loves Canadians :lol:

Because it's unpatriotic not to root for the home team.

Patriotism is okay as long as you don't insult other people's patriotism.
 
Being proud of one's country and its accomplishments is perfectly fine. It's when you start to say that only your country is the best and every other one is crap that the problems start.

Nationalism is fine but not being a citizen of earth first isn't OK IMO.
 
Nationalism is one of several defining characteristics if Fascism. Corporatism is another.
 
I see classism as just a big problem as racism yet nobody gives a shit about it.
 
Correct me if I'm wrong, I think the analogy in the OP is meant as in:
Racism consists of considering (and acting on) a set of people, here defined as belonging to a same "race", to be better than another set of people from another "race".
Nationalism consists of considering (and acting on) a set of people, here defined as belonging to the name nation, to be better than other sets of people from other nations.
In this thinking the two things are not dissimilar at all... yet one is deemed unacceptable, while the other is socially accepted when not even promoted...

This. Racism is negative and destructive, but Nationalism/Patriotism can be a uniting and positive force for a nation. There's nothing wrong with being proud of your nation.

That's 'authoritarian nationalism' though which requires absolute loyalty and obedience to the state and is only interested in the good of it's own state/country.

I only tolerate Nationalism if it's the UK Independence Party's version where anyone can be part of said nation if they speak the language(s) and at least get along well with the majority.

The British National Party is just plain racist. Even going as far as to NOT grant citizenship to people whose ancestors don't come from the British Isles.

Compare Chinese nationalism to Han Chauvinism. The former incorporates other cultures because they have historical ties with China. The latter is of ethnic superiority.
