A new gay club opened in my neighborhood, and at first it wasn't doing to good. But recently, lots of people have been coming. Anyways, I decided to go a few nights ago with some friends.

I'm having a good time with some buddies dancing when all of a sudden, a Ginger guy comes in holding hands with a cute black guy. As soon as they came to the bar, I heard this guy mutter, "what is with all these guys dating niggers". This really made me upset. Part of me wanted to get into that guys face, but I decided to ignore it.

Long story short, I just wanted to say that its sad racism still exists in the gay community. I'm hoping someone can tell me why it does, and what can we do to stop it.
 
racism comes from a sense of superiority. racism is also contagious.

i think its important to call people on racism but not do it in a manner where they will feel threatened.
 
Racism is still everywhere.

It exists because children are taught to be racist by their parents or by adults with influence in their lives.

You should have simply told the other person that their racism is inexcusable and then walked away from them. By not saying anything, you helped racism survive one day longer.
 
Racism is fear as are most isms. Ignorant people just talk louder.
 
Just because people are gay doesn't mean they're enlightened - or smart, or positive, or any of those things.

Fail to see how it was more than a bitter queen with too much mouth though. Next time if you can, confront the bastard with two simple words: You mad?

I'm ginger - I didn't like the capital G but it's sooooo much better than 'ranga'!

I live in DC where mixed race couples are pretty common. The shock value has definitely worn off over the last twenty years. Not everybody is totally accepting of it, but at least they keep their mouths shut.

Give it a little more time and I think that will be true everywhere.

Yes, it's sad that there's a racist guy in the club. But gays are, sorry, no better than anyone else on most things, and the proportion of racists in our community matches the proportion in the surrounding community (which is disappointing; you'd think there'd be SOME impact from being subject to prejudice oneself, but apparently not).

Meanwhile, Taralan, you've called the CLUB racist, which is unfair. One racist guy in a club, unless he's the owner, doesn't make the club racist.

A RACIST club is one that excludes people by race, or where the bartenders serve all the white people first (or all the black people first, etc.).

I remember back in the 70s when the only gay dance club in the small city where I came out made a rule that no hats were allowed. That just seems weird until you realize that in the 70s hats were in fashion in the black and Hispanic communities, but not among whites (at least white gays). So THAT was a racist club, though they tried to disguise their racism in a dress code (I'm betting they would have let a white guy in wearing a hat, but as far as I know no one tried that).

Yeah, I wouldn't mind being the meat in that sandwich! Though if they did 69 they could pose for Yin and Yang (as could I with one of my exes, even though I'm not ginger--I'm pale as pale, and he was like a polished mahogany statue).

'Ranga' sounds like some Australian word..Kinda like how freind of mine from there calls Mc Donalds,''Maccas.'' I didn't know what the hell he was talking about..
