“All right ladies and gents, that’s the bell out of my class!” I leaned on the chalkboard behind me as I saw the barely lit room empty out, the projector still played “Gone with the Wind” the city burned on the white screen, casting odd shadows and colors against the wall.
I was one of the lucky few that was able to land this teaching gig so early in the game, I was a 26 year old History teacher for a highschool in Los Angeles.
“See you tomorrow Joey!” Said a small group of kids as they exited the classroom, I liked the kids calling me by my first name, it felt as if we were equals, partners even as we tried to unveil the mysteries of history. I was about to turn off the projector when Dak walked in computer bag slung carelessly over one shoulder, he smiled and closed the door behind him, he was also one of the few that got the job, he was 25.
“Hello Mr. River, how was class today?” He crossed the room in a few strides and kissed me as he clasped his hands behind my neck pulling me in for a well earned smooch. Dak Stevenson also played the part of straight, high school teacher, just like me except that he was the business and accounting teacher for two periods, and the computer geek for the last three.
“Oh Mr. River, what big eyes you have!” Dak whispered. I placed my hands on his slender waist, massaging his hip bones in big slow circles.
“All the better to see you with” I whispered back.
“Mm Mr. River, what big arms you have!” He put his hands on my biceps and squeezed hard, I saw him close his eyes resting his head on my chest.
“All the better to hold you with, my dear” I whispered back. I kissed his forehead and held him close, Dak Stevenson had been there for me when my father died a couple of months prior, all my family had died off or just disappeared into thin air, untraceable, it had been a relatively small service. My father’s estate had taken care of all the funeral expenses and costs, leaving me, my uncle Edward River and my dad’s business associates to attend Logan River’s farewell.
Dak and I weren’t going out then and we weren’t an item now but all I did know was that I missed him whenever he wasn’t around, besides with his natural jet black hair and icy blue eyes, it was hard to let go.
Dak stood back and eyed while his hand stroked his black goatee.
“You definitely have been working out Joseph, God damn it look at you! You look like some heavyweight out of a magazine!”
“No I don’t” I retorted back, oh man, I had always struggled with my weight my entire life, but after my dad died I decided to make some major changes to my life, one of them was eating healthier and working out and I guess it showed, I was six feet and overweight, now I was on my way to a better looking me, I hoped.
“Stop” one word stopped me and I faced him again, he was serious, he could go from nurturing best friend to crazy football coach in an instant, mostly he kept up the latter persona to keep people from suspecting his orientation, and it worked.
“You don’t have the beer belly thing going on you have a really flat stomach, you got some muscle definition going on too, a lot of definition by the way” He chuckled but continued “and you have a spring on your step, seriously, you look fine, well hot is the better word, especially when you have that suit on…”
There was a knock on the door, we went from dating mode to piers, I opened the door to find Principal Key on the other side, huge smile and all, mid forties and a good looking chap.
“Hello boys, there is a meeting tomorrow after school, don’t forget!” He gave us each a pamphlet, some small talk and left.
“I hear he’s a real asshole when you get on his bad side”
“He seems nice to me Dak”
“Drinks, we can go out of town?” he asked as we walked to the parking lots, it was unusual weather in LA today, it rained, got sunny, and then hail had begun to hit, I made it a date and picked him up at 7. It was crazy to me in the way things were progressing, four months with no sexual contact other than kissing and yet, I was going nuts over him, we called it dating, but we still didn’t know what we wanted from the other.
“So where are we going tonight?” I asked, I donned some jeans and a black polo while he had a fitted tee with jeans, it really complimented his skinny but muscular figure, it had me rock hard for most of the ride there.
“Just drive, hey you know you kind off remind me of Rhino, the villain from Spiderman? Except way cuter…”
“Ah okay, you can stop now…and we’re here, at a gay bar”
“Don’t worry Joe, it’s just a drink!” He grabbed my hand and closed the door behind me, our breath becoming misty ghosts in the cold night air. “Look, if you don’t like it we’ll leave; just give it a shoot man…for me?”
“Sure Dak, just for you.”
“That’s my daddy!” We both laughed as we stumbled in, and actually, it wasn’t that bad, there were couples here and there, most of the guys were either dancing or having a drink by the bar, we got two stools by the bartender.
“Two Heinekens sir” I said, he winked at me and handed the beer to us.
“Any leads?” He asked after a couple of sips, I knew what that question was pertaining to…my son, Gabriel. I felt a lump of cement form in the middle of my stomach and a knot in my throat.
“No…none, it’s as if they just vanished into thin air, no name registries in the yellow pages, and she doesn’t have any family that I know off, I don’t know what to do Dak.”
We drank our first and second set beer without saying anything until finally Dak spoke, obviously the lightweight.
“Don’t you worry Joey River, I’ll help you find your son I swear, only if you do one, small, tiny favor for me!”
“Yeah, what?” I said gloomily.
“Will you dance with me?”
