Hi. I sent my laptop "notebook" for repair a few weeks ago.

I bought a new laptop battery from the repairman because my old laptop battery is spoiled ( cannot be charged anymore)


Anyway the repairman told me this:

First time, once the laptop battery is drained till 1-5 %, plug in the power supply and charge for 6-8 hours.

After that, 2nd and 3rd time onwards, whenever the laptop battery is drained till 1-5 %, plug in the power supply and charge for 3-4 hours.


But the laptop battery will normally be fully charged 100% within an hour, so why do I need to continue charging it ??


I asked the repairman, "will the laptop battery be spoiled if I keep charging it even after it is fully 100% charged"??, He said "No."


Should I listen to his advice?

They always tell you to drain the battery when you get it. Let it run down.

Maybe the 6-8 hour initial charge sets up something physically in the battery, dunno. Maybe the 3-4 hour direction is a warning about not charging it fully and then redraining.

You can't just ask the guy who told you to explain how the battery charging works?

Kōnosuke Matsushita says there's two basic kinds of battery.

Some have to be topped up continually.

The other sort has to be drained down, then charged up, then drained down, then charged up.



Is your battery a Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) battery?

Or a Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery?

Or a Lead Acid battery?

Or a Lithium Ion battery?

Or a Lithium Polymer battery?

Just charge it fully. For lithium batteries it's not a good idea to exhaust them completely.
Likewise it's a good idea to use the laptop using battery power fairly regularly. If it's left plugged in, battery life will decrease faster.

Though at present generally true, that depends on the battery. It also depends on the laptop, because some stop charging the moment the battery is full (most newer ones are that way).

I've had my laptop plugged into the charger for years, 24/7. Still works like a charm and in the few occasions I've had to use it off the batter (power outages, etc) the charge has sustained just like it did when I first bought it.

I keep my laptop plugged in all the time too. Occasionally if I use it somewhere where I can't plug it in, the battery still lasts forever. I have an extra charger that I keep in my bedroom for when I want to browse the computer before I go to bed too. If I use it where I can't plug it in, the battery lasts a long time... and that's with it set for "high performance" whether it's plugged in or not (seriously, set your laptop to "high performance", it'll run much better than it does on "balanced" which is the factory setting.)

Maybe I got into the habit of always keeping it plugged in because my first laptop was used, and the battery was pooched (it would last less than an hour if you were lucky), and you know how some habits die hard.
