Frankie Abernathy, a castmate on "Real World San Diego," died June 9 of cystic fibrosis, MTV.com reports. She was 25.

Abernathy openly discussed her illness on her season of the MTV reality show. She was diagnosed with the hereditary disease at age 3.

In addition to her fight with cystic fibrosis, Abernathy was a memorable cast member in numerous ways. Her phobia of large boats led to problems because the roommates' group job involved working and sailing on a tour boat in San Diego Bay. In one scene, fellow castmates had to throw a jacket over her head to walk her past boats.

She was also remembered for announcing "I'm too punk rock for this," a quote that was quickly picked up as a favorite by fans of the show.

Abernathy was unhappy on the show, and left before the final episodes were aired. In one scene, she intentionally cut herself with a kitchen knife. Her mother, Abbie Hunter, reports that numerous viewers wrote and thanked her for drawing attention to those who cut themselves.

Abernathy's death was unexpected. Her mother told MTV, "She was doing fine, and we really don't know very much yet. It still was kind of a shock, and it just wasn't how we figured things would go. It seems like her little body just gave out."

MTV reports that, in addition to her mother, she is survived by her stepfather, sister and father.

Oh my god, I totally remember her, but I forgot that she had cystic fibrosis. It didn't help that she smoked, too, but it's sad.

Did she leave the season early? I forgot -- her replacement was Little Randy?

Yeah, she left early and was replaced by a man named Charlie

wow. i remember her. even though she was unhappy on the show i liked her. my thoughts go out to her family and friends.

wow I completely forgot about her...but remember how upset I was at her throughout the season cause she smoked. My cousin has CF and the trouble she goes through just being around people who smoke I can't imagine a CF patient actually choosing to smoke. But my thoughts and prayers definitely go out to her family.

never watched the show, but still need to pay my respects..RIP.

My heart goes out to her family. I will say I was surprised to see she lived as long as she did though. Especially with the smoking.

Ya, i forgot about basically the whole cast when i hadnt seen them on TV for a while...like Cameran recently being on MTV again, randy, brad, robin but i had totally forgotten about like her and the other castmates that havent been seen since san diego.

That's unfortunate, even though I didn't like her on the show. Who's afraid of boats?!?!

How sad...she was only 25. I didn't see that particular season, only saw up to New Orleans and that was way back in 2000. According to Wikipedia.com, Frankie Abernathy was actually her real name and I'm guessing maybe her parents wanted to give her a good stage name in hopes for her to be in show business...yup, that's a good stage name, she could've been a recording artist.

Man that's really sad. I liked her alot and thought that she could overcome that disease of her. May she RIP. :(

San Diego was the last season I watched and I really liked Fankie. How sad.
