>>>I feel like reality tv is almost more fake than the regular fictional stuff. Is there any "reality" show that is actually real and not scripted, etc?

I consider reality TV to be like alternative rock - there was a reason for the label originally, but the thing it's describing has altered so much that the label doesn't fit anymore. "Reality TV" still can be held separate from (say) a sitcom - they have different forms, different types of story arcs, different types of characters, all that. But no, most of them aren't "reality" anymore.

There are still some, of course. Shows like Cops, to some degree, still show "life as it happens", although they're often edited for maximum impact. But even then, the people see the cameras, know they're on film, and may change how they act accordingly. The only true "reality" TV would be one where NOBODY knew they were on camera. The old HBO specials "Taxicab Confessions" were like that (even if the driver knew the camera was there).

And as I was looking at various porn sites today I thought the same thing about porn.. these Out in Public sites and Sausage Party or the "Straight Guys" websites... i don't take any of them seriously.

Is this "Reality" media leading us to distrust everything?

#-o?

once upon time far far far away

Well, I was always skeptical when a reality series had a "season finale." I mean, how do you know when to end a series of a reality show?

That's why I don't watch Reality TV. If it's not scripted, it's 'guided' by the production crew.

I don't watch any of them, and I don't watch shows such as Maury Pauvich, either, but I've seen enough promos to see that the 'guests' are all acting. It's the most 'unreality' thing on television.

I remember reading about the Gotti boys here when they had their show on A&E. I decided to give it a go and see what all the fuss was about. It was all supposed to be real life and spontaneous, but Victoria got a very serious 'surprise' phone call which seemed almost life-changing, but the cameras not only captured her conversation, but the guy making the call as well.

I turned it off after that.

But a lot of people gobble up that kind of stuff and 'drama', and that means high ratings, and that means big money for the stations.

Unfortunately, the really bad programmes don't stick around long enough to show how really bad Reality TV really is. (Do 'David Hasselhoff' ring a bell?)

Is it real? Not likely. Do I care? Not really. Lol, seriously, if it holds my attention even a little bit, authenticity really isn't an issue.

^How can it possibly hold your attention? It's shit.

The least they could do is just have the people talking in the confessional explaining what the person on the other end of the line said. Or at least have the conversation recorded. Unless the other person is part of the main cast, I do agree that the way these shows is made can be ridiculous for something that claims to be authentic.

The closest to reality when it comes to reality TV is "The Real Housewives of New York City."

Ramon Singer agrees.

There are, I suppose, degrees of 'reality'.

There is no absolutely neutral observation. Observation changes what is observed. The arrival of the observer changes the thinking and/or actions of the subject being observed, and changes the dynamic of the group.

People know the cameras are on them and the editors of one weeks worth of action aren't going to edit it down to an hour of sandwich making.

If the participants are cast, and the footage is edited, it seems to me its more like improvisational performance art.

That is sort of what the porn version is too... go pretend to be straight blah blah blah. Paying two men to have sex, and casting it as straight guys fucking, may be technically correct, but all parties know they are going to have cock in their mouth or ass or hands... its what they get paid for.
