Can anyone recommend a good Role Playing Game?

I've got a real desire to get into a good roleplaying game but I don't really know much outside of the Final Fantasy series.

Currently replaying FFX-2 cos its there and I never really completed it properly but its lacking in any real storyline so doesn't fill the void. FF12 was good, but I didn't love any of the characters, there was no real romantic sub storyline like in FF7, FF8 and FFX (my 3 favorite in the series) so I just kind gave up on it really, lost interest.

Outside of that I've played Fable which was cool, but again lacking in any real character emotional development, Anachronox for the PC was funny, but I've played the beginning of it so many times its sooo boring to me now.

I couldn't get into Kingdom Hearts at all, I found the combat clunky and difficult.

Again with Zelda the whole Silent main character really forced me to loose interest in it, I know I haven't given it a chance and the one for the DS was great but the Wii Zelda game lost my interest quickly.

Does anyone know of a good roleplaying game with some character relationships! or one that has some character customization! Or am I just mad?

Also I love the idea of MMORPG's like WoW, but the cost to keep playing seems too much, anything similar thats like... I dunno free?

Elder Scrolls I like. Theres also Diablo, and the original Kingdom Under Fire, which is a mix of RTS/RPG. I also really like the Warlords and Warlords Battlecry games. There is also Baldurs Gate(My suggestion, get the entire series, the 2 games and 2 expansions, and play through with one character, is definitely worth it) and Icewind Dale, with another one being Planescape Torment, although the characters and your choices tend to be more linear then customizable, although the alignment and in-party interaction tends to be better. There are plenty of the classics which I could drudge up, but I can't remember all of them. One MS-Dos game I remember is Dungeon Hack, not that good i guess, but is still a fun game.

My suggestion, go to Fileplanet and check out the RPGs they have there. Download ones that look interesting(Fileplanet is pretty safe with that), and get them if you like.

Edit: A couple games that I just remembered. Arcanum, a freaking amazing game with the usual fantasy stuff, like magic, elves, ogres, etc, with technology tossed in. Is extremely fun, and from what I remember, you have alot of customization capabilities when it comes to your characters.

Theres also Avernum/Exile, Geneforge, and Nethergate, some classic-style RPGs with decent gameplay and storyline.

Siege of Avalon, although somewhat linear in what you can do, is still worth every minute IMO.

For MMORPGS, I can name a few. there is Tibia, it's a free game with the option to become a premium member, theres also Runescape(shudder) with the same option, as well as Ragnorak and Gaia Online. I think I remember one called Kal Online, a sort of asian focused RPG game, was pretty good, but I got tired with it.

For Browser RPGS, theres Adventure Quest, Dragonfable, Mechwars(I think), and many many others.

For playability, I would have to say the Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dale games are the best, mostly because you can import your characters from previous games in the series, literally continuing the storyline with the same character.

Well, what system do you have?

Just played Lost Odyssey for 360. Pretty damn good, in my opinion. Has romantic subplots, if thats something you like.

I would recommend Kingdom Hearts 2. Way improved over the first one, and the friendship of Sora and Riku is practically as gay as they come. I think you'd be fine to Wikipedia the plot of the first one and then play the 2nd one. They are dramatically different.

Well I own a Wii, PSP, DS, PS2 and a PC, those are my current systems.

Just downloaded Sword of the New World a free 2 play MMORPG that looks cool, although aparently extra features cost money. I just want a game like that, but doesn't keep costing money each month, I have looked into some fun free 2 play MMORPG's but they all have there catches.

Earthbound for SNES. you'll probably have to DL an emulator to play, but it's fucking fantastic.

For MMORPG, there is a lot of it especially from Asia. If you like cute character then maybe Maple Story. For better graphic there is Cabal Online (but i haven't play it yet).

For RPGs, there really isnt a whole lot being made currently. playstation used to have a whole lot but many developers are not making alot of them anymore due to costs. Have you played FFVI yet? one of my favorites in the series.

As for MMORPGs...
Even WoW imo is a dieing game. Ive played since it came out, quit because of RL issues and started up again. If you are like me and are more of a hardcore gamer, alot of the MMOs are catering to the casual gamer now which is a huge turnoff for me. What the companies dont realize is that the HC gamers are the core group of people that play. W/E, as long as they get money, they dont care. The Warhammer MMO is coming out shortly and that will probably be the WoW killer.

Didn't really answer your question but yeah.
