Are these easy to use? Do you prefer this kind over others? Random thoughts?

or this kind

Because of disabilities I can no longer ride my mountain bike anymore. I am curious if this kind would work for me. Any info would be good.

If you like to inhale the exhaust gases from cars or want to be overlooked by drivers, use them.

I stick to usual (foldable) bikes.

I see them around, don't get the point unless severe back problems are involved.

They seem to cost a lot, the lower profile is dangerous..

The ones I have seen have shields. I’m not too sure how well it would work though for that kind of thing.

That is one of my issues. I have a herniated disk pinching the nerve to my left leg, a bad left knee, a bad left hip and a bad right wrist. I want to ride again, but I can’t handle riding a regular bike anymore.

I have seen a few that sit up higher, but I don't know how high they go.

Do you know of any places in Portland that rent these kind of bikes by chance?

No, I don't, but there must be at least one place that does rent them.

I think that when using a recumbent bike a high flying flag is a great idea..

I will look into it thanks.

Yeah I would do something if I got one to make it stand out a bit better. I don't know how much that would help though. People like to drive too fast around here.

My own bike is a shocking yellow color, just to be seen.

And I try to wear colors that stand out too..

Yeah that will be part of my problem. I really dislike attention being on me in person. I almost alway make myself blend in. If I start riding again I would have to do something to stick out which I don't like the idea of.

You are brave if you ride around Portland.

I see these kind of things when I see people ride by all the time. I might have to use one of them and a long flag.

There was a shop in Corvallis that had them when I was at OSU, so there must be one in Portland. I think it was "Bike N Hike"; they have stores in a number of places.

Bike in Just a jock strap, if you want to stand out.

LOTS of people bike in Portland. It just takes a rear-view mirror and confidence.

edit: just google "Bike N Hike". They're in Albany, too, which would be closer to you.

Thanks.

I looked it up, but I didn't find any place that said they rented any. I have a feeling though their sites are designed to get you into their stores. None of the bike shop sites I have looked at seem to have the info I am looking for, but a few say they carry the kind I want.

I just explored the web site -- it's pretty minimal. If that's designed to get people into their stores, it sucks -- I'd just go on to another site.

I remember them because their service was always friendly and good, at least in Corvallis and Albany.

I didn’t write my response very well. I meant that in general. I found a site for most Oregon bike shops (with links to each) and all of them that said they deal in these kind of bikes are lacking in info. I think they want to try and up sell us, which is easier in person. I may be wrong though and they all just have crappy sites.

I've heard it's really difficult to ride recumbent bikes up hills. That's all I know about them.

They look like great fun, though. :-)

That is good to know. With my left side injuries I know I will have to try one out to see if that is the case. I would think one of the three wheeled ones would be easy to get up hill with, but maybe not.
