Right now, pretty much everyone still refers to non-overweight weight as normal weight. You know, the range of weight between overweight and underweight. Even weight charts used by doctors and fitness people label that range as "normal".

But what if this normal range is in the minority now?

Acording to the CDC, 2 in 3 American adults are overweight or obese. In other words, overweight people now outnumber "normal" weight people.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/obesity-overweight.htm

So, shouldn't overweight be the new "normal"?

If 2 out of 3 people are gay, then there's no doubt gay would be normal and we can throw the straigties into conversion therapy camps. Electrocute their genitals.

Let me be clear, this thread is not about which is better. This thread is about the evolution of the word "normal".

Having a car used to be not normal. Now it is. Having an outhouse used to be normal. Now it is not. Being able to read and write used to be abnormal. Now it is normal.

They likely should re-brand it as 'optimal' weight.

Because overweight is obviously the new normal around the globe.

That's a good replacement word for "normal". Because normal suggests where most people are. But right now we know that this is not the case anymore.

Yeah, "optimal" works better.

When the current average weight is at least a standard deviation (probably more like 1.5) away from what is considered "normal," then normal must be redefined.

Around the globe?

Yup.

Even in developing countries, as the affluent classes have access to processed foods and higher levels of sugars, fats and simple carbs, combined with lower levels of activity, there is a trend to overweight.
