Reformattig Question

Shouldn't he try to run Spybot and Adaware in safe mode? That's what I was told to do by an IT show, from Miami University.

Safe mode will not stop the virus/trojan from hiding out in the system restore folder as far as i know.

Edit: i think i was wrong /\ so he should go ahead and boot to safe mode and try all the scans again, but he should also turn off system restore when he does it.

Finally Made It Back! Now I,m Having Problems With My Email,I Click On An Image Or ********** Link And No response.Could It possibly Be My Mouse Or A Bad Connection Somewhere?I Will Try Some Of Your suggestions and Wait Patiently But If Things Get Much Worse I Will Have To Do Something.Thank,s Again!

if you haven't managed to get system restore back up try this:

click start
then click run
type services.msc

scroll down to system restore service
click ONCE to highlight
right click, then select properties
a popup menu comes up and about mid way down you'll see:
start up type make sure it is AUTOMATIC. if not use the arrow to give you the selecitons and then select AUTOMATIC and close every thing out.

hope this helps.

one other thing, IF you do have a virus/trojan and you make backup copies, most trojans can/will copy themselves to the backup. once you have removed the trojan from your system, before you restore your files scan them for virus/trojans..

Automatic updates are what he couldn't get turned back on, not system restore. ;)

I don't think it is your browser or your mouse. if the info on the BTG trojan i read is correct for what you have, it's a trojan dialer and is probably taking up the vast majority of your internet usage (your bandwidth), it's what is making it so hard for you to do anything on the internet.

i ran across another antispyware program that has a free 30 day trial that may help you: http://download.grisoft.cz/filedir/inst/avgas-setup-7.5.1.43-3339.exe

download it (if you can) install it and then shut down and reboot in safe mode as mentioned by jsd up above (but also shut off system restore as i said). to get into safe mode restart your computer and press and hold F8 to get to the menu, then select "safe mode with network support" (i might not have the wording correct on that, but it should be close). then you'll get into safe mode, things will look all funky, but once in there run the program i liked to above, you can also run the other antispyware programs you have as jsd mentioned above. in my reply above to what he said i think i was wrong. so run all your scans again in safe mode and let us know if any of that works.
