Ok i have a problem, I am trying to connect to my desktop PC via my laptop using the build in "Remote Desktop Connection" facilty on windows. So i have set up my network Router connects to internet and my Desktop Connects to the router via LAN cable (Ethernet) my laptop connects wirelessly to the router. Both have access to the internet and it works and i have also set up various shared folders which both can access. However i can connect to my laptop off the desktop pc via the remote desktop connection but not the other way round! Dont know why this is?!? My laptpop is XP Media centre edition SP2 and my desktop is XP home SP2. Any help would be great thanks:-)
 
did you check if the remote desktop service is activated on the machine that you can't access?

you can do this in the system settings in the control panel (or: right click->properties on my computer):

Remote desktop is not a part of the standard OS for XP Home (or Media Center, I think.) These editions were made for home, so the advanced networking such as remote desktop were not included. The screenshot above comes from XP Pro.

Bigred is correct, you cannot connect to a computer running XP Home with Remote Desktop Connection. You can only do that on XP Media Center, Tablet, x64 and Pro. Or Vista Business, Enterprise or Ultimate. However any version of windows or OSX can run the client to connect to those computers. You can try RealVNC, but its slower and shows what your doing on the remote computer. It basically just takes screen shots and sends them to you, where as Remote Desktop is sending the Interface Drawing commands to your computer.

I don't use the microsoft version, instead I use ultravnc found at http://www.uvnc.com/ . It works with 95/98/2000/xp/vista and I think linux.

It will work within a network and over the internet, with dial-up or highspeed. You don't even need the "receiver/controller" software on the client computer since it will work over a browser using java.
 
I found the download on the microsoft site which is for like 98 and 95 and stuff but to me its crazy that it wont let me install it on XP HOME (AKA desktop pc) think i will try the uvnc one thanks for all the help keep it coming
