I just heard the news about Rent closing on Broadway on June 1st. This makes me so sad, it was such a landmark musical that changes a lot of things on Broadway. It sucks and I hope I get the opportunity to go see it before it closes

It was groundbreaking in the 90's. But its so dated now. And that horrible movie version didn't help.

I saw it three times on Broadway. Looks like I'll have to check it at least one more time. lol

saw it six time on broadway... bought tickets to 3 shows now including the last

so sad... though excited i'm seeing the last one

Bummer

saw it 2x - had to be dragged the first time cuz i was gonna hate it

bought the cd the next day

love it

will def go see it again before it closes

glad to see it close only so we can get something new in that theatre. I've seen the show 4 times and might see it one last time but its just so dated now

I've got to say i have only seen the movie but that PISSED ME OFF! it paints Bohemian lifestyle in such a bad light! we are not all whiny heroin addicts who think getting a job is "selling out" and that we shouldn't have to live by the same rules as everyone else!

okay i'm done....

I saw Rent and I have to say too I didn't think it was going to be my bag, but I was wrong. I saw the original cast...Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, Daphne Rubin Vega...and damn, the music, the words, the story, it was all beautiful. Really poignant (a word I rarely use).

I have never seen the movie, and I will never see it, because to see it on the stage was such an eye-opening experience. Anyway, as Broadway closings go, not to worry...they'll drag it back when they think the time is right...I've lived in Manhattan for 17 years, and I can tell you there's no such thing as a true "Broadway closing".'

rent doesn't generalize bohemians at all. 2 out of the 8 main characters did heroine.. and it wasn't getting a job that was selling out, it was getting a job that you didn't believe in. i think you should watch the movie again or see the play and re-evaluate your thoughts on it. it truly is a great story.

In my opinion, although I haven't seen it on stage, the movie is crap compared to the actual performance.

i agree with you. I think that the movie is a lot better if you can fill in all the blanks with what happens in the show. a lot of important things were left out

I'll bet. And IMO, the final song(name??) should have been sung more.

I saw it on Broadway with the original cast in September, it was great but the theatre was half full so I'm not surprised it's closing. It's coming back to Toronto in March with Heinz Winckler, the hottie from South African Idol.

In London, they launched a Rent: Remixed version which updated the songs and took out a lot of the electric guitar, I would like to see this in North America. I'm surprised they didn't switch to this version and instead closed it.

I know. I'm so sad :(
I would really like to see it once before it closes, and then on the final night.
Final performances are usually the best, as I found out with the 2007 UK Tour.
It makes me depressed.
I guess it closed because of low ticket sales...?

The London revision of Rent was not well received and has already posted closing notices.

Yeah, the ticket sales have dropped, but it ran for over 11 years and made some people a lot of money. I'm glad it's going out with a little bit of grace as opposed to hanging around and playing for years with little to no audience and trying to cast every D-List celebrity available to try and boost ticket sales (did someone say Chicago?)

For the record, it will extend at least a month. I've heard August 24th as the final performance.
