Repairable?

Do you think my coat might be repairable? It is too expensive to replace. Also it is the jacket my mother bought me right before she died as a going away gift. I'd like to keep it. A new one is like $200 so may be cheaper to just buy another. It is a wool long coat.

If it were mine, I think, with damage like that, it would be heading for the bin. I can't help you with the sentimental value angle though.

Anything is repairable. There are people whose darning is so good that they could make it look as new, but they are not easy to find. Look up 'invisible mending'
I never got the hang of darning so I would have to cheat and use glue. Since it is wool it will only get a cold wash if at all, which makes it easier to get away with glue, it tends to fail in a hot wash. There may be a part of the garment that does not show, like underneath a collar or inside a pocket. You can use this as a donor, as in a skin graft. The donor area can be patched up with any old rag end as it will not be seen. Otherwise search all over the house for a scrap of something a matching colour. Sewing thread can be found in any possible colour so you can find an exact match and use plenty of that to blur the line between the old part and the repair.
It is worth spending time on even if you can't get a perfect repair. It's sad to throw out a thing with such a family connection.

I am thinking I might get me a new one for when I need to be dressy and keep this one for when I go to events I need a coat, but will be on my mobility scooter. That is how I damaged it. I ran it over while on my scooter.

Whereabouts on the coat is the damage? There is a procedure called reweaving, which is very specialised and probably very expensive. If there is enough spare cloth in a hidden part it could be used to make a patch. I think it would be worth a try. People even have jeans repaired and restored now by specialist "denim doctors".

Almost to the bottom of the long coat, close to the buttons.

If it is very long and the damage is near the bottom, consider having the hem raised so the damage cannot be seen. Any place that does clothing alterations can do this for you.
