Repeal SB48 to make California ballot

Sources are reporting that opponents of California Bill SB048 -- the FAIR act (nicknamed the "Gay History bill") will have enough petition votes to put the FAIR act on the ballot to repeal the initiative. The bill would have mandated schools to incorporate LGBT issues into the American history curriculum. Petitions have reportedly been going around churches and shopping centers in more socially conservative areas of California.

The "Stop SB48" website reports that its major supporters include the Family Research Council & the Traditional Values Coalition.

The vote would be held in June 2012, during the same election as the California Republican primary, when conservatives are expected to turn out in droves.

Equality California and other gay organizations have said that trying to campaign against repealing SB048 will be difficult, and most likely the opponents of SB048 will win, repealing the FAIR act.

The conservatives are inadvertantly doing us a favor.. Let the people vote. And hopefully as the issue gets bigger, it will bring attention specifically to how they lied to get those signatures.

Maybe I'm naive, but I think the more recognition gay issues get, even if it's coming from religious extremists, the better. Hopefully people will see this, realise it's wrong.. (It's rewriting history to erase minorities basically) and push the neocons back into their corner.

Yeah there was a story on it in the LA times about people signing the petition thinking it was for child molestation in their community but it was for repealing this bill. I wish I could find the article but meh.

This whole business of voting on people's rights is a big reason the founding fathers didn't trust democracy, why the framers limited democracy in the Constitution. The U.S. has been steadily eroding the guards against democracy, bringing us this silliness of voting on whether minorities should be treated fairly.

I voted "yes" on Prop 8 back in 2008. But I was totally closeted back then. We had a yellow "yes on Prop 8" lawn sign on our yard. Almost all of our neighbors did too. Except for one family who lived at the end of the street. There were rumors that they were lesbians, but nobody really talked to them, so I don't know for sure.

California already had domestic partnerships which offered the same rights & protections as "traditional" marriage, so I thought that voting "yes" was okay.

Plus I thought of myself of being straight back then. Even though I used to fantasize about guys.

California now has an open primary I believe. Democrats and supporters of LGBT rights should turn out in drove and vote against this stupid initiative AND vote for the weakest candidate still on the ballot in the Republican primary in order to fuck up their convention.

It's good to see someone taking up charging them with this. I do what I can for CA. Signing their petitions is about all I can do here in Texas.
