Replacing old lies with new

^PH might be a factor, but I also wonder if there isn't something in the detergent that lingers that causes a problem for some people.

There is something like that in Caterpillar™ 'phones already. The synthetic rubber/plastic body crumbles and splits after about 4 years.
Probably just a side effect of using the cheapest possible plastic China can make.
Could well be the resut of cheapest possible plastic!

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I meant PH of the detergent. It's a given that it remains in the fabric, just a question of how much. As someone (maybe you) said earlier, it persists even after an extra rinse. Fabric may contain very little of it, but enough to make a PH contrast to the skin it touches. It could cause a reaction not unlike the problem some have with silver or copper or nickel touching them in jewelry.

^I knew what you meant. And detergents can be far off PH neutral, and residue could be a factor.

But I was thinking there could be other chemicals, too, that can be a problem for reasons other than PH. Given how Tide is a high end product, it's probably been loaded with a lot more chemicals per cup than, say, All.

Speaking of All... I noticed comments about how unscented is more expensive. I used to buy unscented All sometimes, but I've noticed it has gotten really expensive vs. regular All. Even unscented Tide is probably cheaper--at least at times.

On Amazon, regular Tide and unscented are the same price $12.97 for 96oz. All unscented was quite a bit more expensive. $20 for around 80 oz.

IMO Tide works a lot better. I always use the unscented, free and clear
