Republican candidate says Autism & Dementia Are God's Punishments For Gays & Abortions

She's worse even than the OP implies.

She also says that macular degeneration and the polar vortex are the result of gay marriage in America. (As if none of the things she describes ever happened, prior to gay marriage).

Atanus is a poster child for what the GOP has become. Anti-science, anti-reason, anti-gay, religious authoritarianism.

This. The Republican party became the garbage can for the religiously ignorant who preach hate and discrimination. They have destroyed it.

Is this what you would be saying if this were a Democrat who blamed natural disasters on Republican immorality in public statements?

No, no it isn't.

I'd say the same thing. Kooks are kooks no matter what the party.

.
Susanne Atanus is the embodiment of everything the Republicon party stands for:

Susan Atanus is one of the kindest, warmest, bravest, most wonderful human beings I have ever known.

There must be a full moon out as the right wing wackos are crazier than ever.

The charming Susanne Atanus, a republican hopeful for Illinois' 9th Congressional District (Chicago's far north side and suburbs) spoke about how angry God is because of gay marriage, civil unions and abortions. She claimed tornadoes and autism and dementia are punishments from God because of recent advances in the LGBT movement .

In a previous questionnaire for ABC Chicago, Atanus also suggested she does not believe in global warming and she claims the stock market crash of 1929 never actually happened.

What can one say about an insane person like this? Are republicans really going to vote for someone like this?

She has it a little bit backwards. An excessive number of demented Republican candidates is God's punishment on the GOP for their anti-LGBT, anti-science, bigoted cult of ignorance.

Which is on par with the hate that some gays project towards Christianity.

Both belong in the same garbage can.

Last time I looked, some gays weren't saying that they should be running the entire country. The Republicans are. It is way more problematic when religious right wingers want to control the world than when a few homos hurt the feelings of those who are so far away from the teachings of Christ that they are unrecognizable as His followers.

You are engaging in the same logic the Puritans used that got them booted to America. I can't persecute others according to my religious beliefs, so you are oppressing my religion.

Disgusting bullshit. Christians have harmed us since Christianity existed. Hating your oppressors is NEVER THE SAME as hating the ones you oppress. And fuck anyone who claims they are.

That's also the same logic that Christianists are currently using.

It's the same hate. Which is sad.

It's the same hate. Which is sad.

The English were completely right to throw out people who wanted to burn people at the stake for differing in belief or practice.

Likewise, we are right to hate a religious-political alliance that has almost nothing to do with following Christ's teachings about love, compassion and caring for your neighbor and seem entirely to revolve around trying to determine who should have equal rights in society based off obscure Bible verses.

By your screwed up logic the Nazis were also victims of hate.

It's the same hate. Which is sad.

Bullshit. You aren't sad about this at all. You would be delighted if the 'christians' were unchallenged and in charge of a talibangelical government that would allow you to hide deep, deep, deep in the closet where you feel most powerful and unthreatened.

I'll say it again Springer. Most of the critics of 'Christianity' are closer to Christ than the southern baptist convention that you believe in so utterly.

Sorry, but you don't know what church I belong to -- it's definitely not the southern baptists.

Rareboy .. hate is hate whether it's directed at gay or at Christians.

Or directed at President Obama or women or minorities or immigrants or Muslims or the poor or.....

True Bob. ... or republicans, President Bush, Ted Cruz, women, minorities of any shape, size or color, Christians, straight people, bisexuals, ... the list goes on.

Did you take a new selfie this morning?

I didn't say which church you belong to. I said what you appear to believe in.

No, hate is definitely not all equal. Hate of people who use their bigotry to enact injustice on others in society is not the same thing as hating a whole group of people because you prejudicially assign to all of them a proclivity to harm or immorality or crime or whatever other excuse, without regard for any evidence or reason. When you equate gay people hating anti-gay fundamentalist political alliances to fundamentalists trying to legislate against all gay people, that's what you're doing.

As I pointed out before this idiotic argument could have been used to say "The Nazis and Jews hated each other so no one was really more wrong."

There's a big difference between "I hate butter on popcorn" and saying "I hate faggots". There's different kinds of hate.

My first thought when I saw her was she looks like she would be Putin's mother...or his mistress...

LOL Yeah, in Russia she could be considered good-looking.

Well put.

Christians who try to pass laws to tell others how to behave because they think that's the way God wants people to behave are antichrists: they are doing the work of the flesh and calling it the work of God. And the moment they demand that this one (alleged) piece of the Law be followed, it is incumbent on them to follow it all.

True. Even worse, they're theocrats! No respect for freedom of conscience.
